If beloved Egypt has honored her guest,

Is it any wonder, then, that the guest is honored in Egypt?

Welcome, O you whom we rejoice to meet,

And whom we cannot thank as fully as we ought.

The luminaries of culture and intellect salute you

With the finest that people of renown offer in greeting.

And masters of eloquence compose, in homage

To your stature, masterpieces of verse and prose.

Can a noble Arab forget the merit of what

You devoted most of your life to renewing?

You restored to the people of ḍād, from their store of glory,

A precious heritage that no treasure can match.

    فبُورِكَ مِنْ بَحْرٍ وَبُورِكْتَ مِنْ حَبْرِ

    And you set the sea of knowledge flowing from its scholar’s breast;

So blessed be that sea, and blessed be you as a scholar!

Travel—may God protect you—through every land

Of the East, and you will know the glory you have won.
