ظَلَلْتُ وَالشَّوْقُ مُحْرِقٌ كَبِدِي

ظَلَلْتُ وَالشَّوْقُ مُحْرِقٌ كَبِدِي

حَتَّى قَضَى السَّعْدُ فِي الهَوَى وَطَرِي

حَتَّى قَضَى السَّعْدُ فِي الهَوَى وَطَرِي

I remained while longing scorched my liver,

I languished while yearning burned my liver,

until good fortune fulfilled my desire in love.

Until destiny brought joy in love and freedom.

فَكَانَ يَوْمٌ لا شَمْسَ فِيهِ سِوَى

فَكَانَ يَوْمٌ لا شَمْسَ فِيهِ سِوَى

شَمْسِ وَلا نَيِّرٌ سِوَى قَمَرِي

شَمْسِ وَلا نَيِّرٌ سِوَى قَمَرِي

Then came a day with no sun in it except

Then came a day with no sun but my own,

Shams, and no luminary except my moon.

No light but my moon's soft beams.

أَنْجَزَ وَعْداً فِيهِ الصَّفَاءُ فَلَمْ

أَنْجَزَ وَعْداً فِيهِ الصَّفَاءُ فَلَمْ

يَشِبْهُ غَيْرُ الوَعِيدِ مِنْ عُمَرِ

يَشِبْهُ غَيْرُ الوَعِيدِ مِنْ عُمَرِ

He fulfilled a promise marked by sincerity; nothing

A promise kept, in purest faith -

but Umar's threat resembled it.

No threat could match that day in my life's span.

حُسْنِي إِلَى جَانِبِي وَسَطْوَتُهُ

حُسْنِي إِلَى جَانِبِي وَسَطْوَتُهُ

حُصْنِي فَمَا خَشْيَتِي وَمَا حَذَرِي

حُصْنِي فَمَا خَشْيَتِي وَمَا حَذَرِي

Husni is at my side, and his might

My beauty close, his passion conquered me;

is my fortress—so why should I fear, and why be wary?

My fortress breached - no fear, no caution left.
