وإلى مناي قريحتي لا ترتقي

I am unsuccessful at improvising verse,

I am unsuccessful in improvising evil,

And my poetic gift does not rise to my aspirations.

And my talent cannot reach my purpose.

ألنفس تدعو والعوائق جمة

ما حيلتي في وقتي المستغرق

ما حيلتي في وقتي المستغرق

The soul calls, and the obstacles are many;

The self calls while obstacles abound,

What can I do when my time is wholly taken up?

What can I do in my preoccupied time?

يا فارس الخير اعذرن أخا له

في يومك المشهود وقفة مطرق

في يومك المشهود وقفة مطرق

O knight of goodness, forgive a brother who

O knight of goodness, pardon a brother of his,

On your celebrated day stands with bowed head.

On your witnessed day, bowing in silence,

إن لم توات بلاغة فينظمه

إن لم توات بلاغة فينظمه

شفعت بلاغة دمعه المترقرق

شفعت بلاغة دمعه المترقرق

If eloquence does not aid him in his verse,

If eloquence does not accompany his composition,

The eloquence of his glistening tears intercedes.

The eloquence of his flowing tears will intercede.

لمثالك المرفوع ظل مهابة

لمثالك المرفوع ظل مهابة

يجلي به وضح المحيا المشرق

يجلي به وضح المحيا المشرق

Your raised likeness bears a shadow of awe,

For your exemplary image, a shadow of awe remains

Through which the brightness of the radiant face is revealed.

Illuminating with its bright smile.

ما معدن متشبه في نقله

ما معدن متشبه في نقله

من معدن في أصله متألق

من معدن في أصله متألق

What is metal, imitative in its copy,

No similar metal in conveying it

Beside metal radiant in its original?

From a metal originally shining.

فليعلم الأعقاب من ذاك الذي

فليعلم الأعقاب من ذاك الذي

زان الظهور بتاج هذا المفرق

زان الظهور بتاج هذا المفرق

Let posterity then know who he is,

So let generations know the one who

Who adorned the heights with the crown of this head.

Adorned appearances with this distinguished crown.

ألعزم والإقدام ملء إهابه

ألعزم والإقدام ملء إهابه

وفضائل القلب الأبر الأرفق

وفضائل القلب الأبر الأرفق

Resolve and daring fill his frame,

Resolve and determination fill his awe,

And the virtues of the kindest, gentlest heart.

And the virtuous, gentle heart's merits.

رجل أرا من الزمان مضنة

رجل أرا من الزمان مضنة

والناس بين مكذب ومصدق

والناس بين مكذب ومصدق

A man who sought a treasure Time begrudged,

A man I saw the era's ordeals weary,

While people were divided between disbelief and belief;

While people waver between disbelief and belief.

فأصابها بعد المراس ولم يكن

فأصابها بعد المراس ولم يكن

أمل لغير ممارس بمحقق

أمل لغير ممارس بمحقق

Then he won it after struggle; never was

He mastered them after tribulation, though there was

A hope fulfilled for one who did not strive.

No hope for other than a seasoned veteran.

يا من بهمته زها هذا الحمى

يا من بهمته زها هذا الحمى

وبهى الحواضر بالسنى والرونق

وبهى الحواضر بالسنى والرونق

O you whose resolve made this domain flourish,

O you whose determination adorned this resolve,

And outshine the cities in radiance and splendor.

And beautified the dwellings with brilliance and splendor.

إهنأ بثوب للخلود لبسته

إهنأ بثوب للخلود لبسته

والبس جديدا ما حييت وأخلق

والبس جديدا ما حييت وأخلق

Rejoice in the robe of immortality you have donned,

Congratulations on the robe of eternity you wore,

And wear a new robe as long as you live, and wear it out.

And wear ever new creations while you live and originate.

واقرر طوا الدهر عينا بالذي

واقرر طوا الدهر عينا بالذي

شارفت من هذا الجمال المونق

شارفت من هذا الجمال المونق

And let your eye rejoice for all time in what

And settle for long ages with satisfaction in what

You have beheld of this enchanting beauty.

You attained of this beautiful, graceful perfection.

نافست أهل الغرب في مضمارهم

نافست أهل الغرب في مضمارهم

وأريت ما يسطيع أهل المشرق

وأريت ما يسطيع أهل المشرق

You vied with the people of the West in their own arena,

You competed with Westerners in their own arena,

And showed what the people of the East can do.

And showed what Easterners can accomplish.

ورفعت في لبنان راية فتية

ورفعت في لبنان راية فتية

من قومه في كل شوط أسبق

من قومه في كل شوط أسبق

And in Lebanon you raised a banner of young men,

And you raised the banner of youth in Lebanon

From his people, foremost in every race.

From his people, ahead in every field.

هي بلدة صدق العزيمة شادها

كم للعزيمة آية إن تصدق

كم للعزيمة آية إن تصدق

It is a town that true resolve has built;

It is a country sincerity of purpose built,

How many wonders resolve can work, if it is true!

How many signs if sincerity is believed?

حفت بها الجنات والنعمى بها

حفت بها الجنات والنعمى بها

ماذا تركن لزاهد أو متق

ماذا تركن لزاهد أو متق

Gardens surround it, and bliss dwells within it;

Surrounded by gardens and bounty within it,

What have they left for an ascetic or a pious person?

What is left for an ascetic or devout?

ألعيش طلق والنسيم مؤرج

في جوها والورد غير مرنق

في جوها والورد غير مرنق

Life is carefree, and the breeze is fragrant

A free living, and the breeze is fragrant

In its air, and the drinking water is clear.

In its air, and untainted roses.

فيحاء تنبسط الروائع حولها

شتى وفي نظر المطالع تلتقي

شتى وفي نظر المطالع تلتقي

Spacious, with wonders spread all around it,

Modesty's charms spread around it

Of many kinds, yet meeting in the beholder's gaze.

Variously, and to beholders they converge.

في كل مرمى للحاظ منسق

في كل مرمى للحاظ منسق

يقضي له عجبا وغير منسق

يقضي له عجبا وغير منسق

In every reach of the gaze is an ordered scene

In every vista for the beholder arranged

That he deems a marvel, and an unordered one;

Amazingly, and not arranged.

من فاته نظر إليه لم يزل

من فاته نظر إليه لم يزل

متلفتا بفؤاده المتشوق

متلفتا بفؤاده المتشوق

Whoever misses a look at it never ceases

He who missed seeing it has not ceased

To look back with his yearning heart.

Yearning for it with his longing heart.
