How can the debt of this kindness be repaid?
How can I repay the kindness of these good people?
Can love from one who falls short suffice?
Can someone who falls short make amends?
يَاO كِرَاماًnoble ones أَدُّوْاpaid حُقوقَthe dues of عُلاَهُمْtheir high worth

O noble ones, who paid their own high worth its due,
O you who are so generous, fulfill their rights
not my due—thanks to you, and thanks again.
I have no rights; all praise belongs to you
أَيُّwhat رِفْدٍgift كَرِفْدِكُمْlike your gift مَاnot رَأَيْنَاwe saw

What gift compares with yours? We had never seen
What gift compares to yours that we have seen
before it, glory itself bestowed as a gift.
Glory was theirs before this gift was made

I am nothing but through my people
I am the luckiest of those who seek knowledge.
The happiest of students seeking knowledge

I became what the generosity of those among them who wished it decreed,
I became whatever the grace of those who so chose wished
while the nights still brought ill fortune and good.
And the nights passed, some sad and some joyful

Warm welcomes have come to me in succession in every
Kindness came to me everywhere

And righteousness grew in me; before I was twice as weak
وَزَكَاand grew البِرَkindness بيtoward me تِباعاًsuccessively افَماso whatever أَكْبَadmired (start of أَكْبَرْتُ)

And kindness toward me kept growing; whatever I admired
If fancy had taken any credit from me
before, I found twice as great afterward.
I would have shunned vainglory utterly
فَلَوِand if الْوَهْمُfancy نَالَgained مِنِّيover me مَنَالاًa hold

And if fancy had gained any hold on me,
Happy is this friendly gathering that displayed to us
I would have thought my drink a draught from the Milky Way.
The harmony your fellowship has brought

Whence affection settles the eyes
to us so much of your harmony!

The more my family suffers hardship
each moment with longing, and burns with ardent love.
The stronger my love grows

Whenever adversity bears harder upon your people,
How can life not be ransom for a people like this beloved redeemed people
that love grows and grows stronger.
My weeping wounded homeland

How could life not be given in sacrifice for a people
Where we drink sorrow and bask in happiness
like this cherished people, worthy of sacrifice?
If your oneness were to be fragmented

My weeping, sorrowful homeland, where
My love for you in my heart would not diminish one bit
we drink grief and choke on sleeplessness.
How can the divisive one build a wall
إِنْif تُجَزَّأْyou are divided مِنْfrom وَحْدَةٍunity لَمْnot يَكُنْbe حَboundary (start of حَدُّكَ)

Even if you are divided after unity, your boundary
Between the souls of a mother's children?
within the heart would remain what it was.
From Carmel to Aleppo I found
كَيْفَhow يَبْنِيbuilds ذَاكَthat المفَرِّقُdivider حِسّاًtangibly
فِيamong بَنِيchildren of الأُمِّthe mother بَيْنَbetween روحَيْنِtwo souls سَدَّاa wall
How can that divider build a tangible
A kinship never reckoned as stranger
wall between two souls among one mother's children?
My homeland, if eternal bliss were sold to us
مِنْfrom ذُرَىheights of كَرْمِلٍCarmel إِلىto حَلَبٍAleppo أَلْفَيْfound (start of أَلْفَيْتُ)
تُI (suffix of أَلْفَيْتُ) قُرْباًnearness مَاwhat كَانَwas يُحْسَبُwas considered بُعْدَاdistance
From Carmel's heights to Aleppo, I found
At the price of one day away from you, we would not buy immortality
closeness where distance had been assumed.
True misery is only in being away from you
وَطَنِيmy homeland لَوْif بِبُعْدِنَاfor our distance عَنْكَfrom you يَوْماًfor one day
بِيعَwere sold خُلْدُeternity النَّعيمِof bliss لَمُnot نَشْرِwe would buy خُلُدَاeternity
My homeland, if for one day's distance from you
Everyone cries or sorrows and grieves loss
eternal bliss were sold, we would not buy eternity.
All were attacking their brother in religion
إِنَّماonly البؤْسُmisery عَنْكَfrom you أَقْصَىdrove away فَكُلٌّso each
آدَمٌAdam أَوْor أَبْكَىmore tearful وَآلَمُand more anguished فَقْدَاin loss
Misery alone drove us away from you; each of us
So the people failed and the enemy dominated
is Adam, or more tearful and more anguished by loss.
From you, Haifa, though Haifa is the dearest
كَانَused to كُلٌّeach فِيin الدِّينِreligion يُوهِيweaken أَخَاهُhis brother
فَوَهَىso grew weak الشَّعبُthe people وَالعَدوُّand the enemy اسْتَبَدَّاruled despotically
Each used to weaken his brother over religion,
Pearl in the coasts, strung as a precious necklace
so the people grew weak, and the enemy ruled despotically.
And her people I found to have the nobility of character
مِنْكَpart of you حَيفَاHaifa وَإنَّand indeed حَيفَاHaifa لأغْلَىsurely the most precious
درَّةٍa pearl فِيamong الثُّغورِthe seaports يُنَظمْنَare strung عِقْدَاas a necklace
Haifa is part of you, and Haifa is indeed the most precious
Too much recount and number
pearl among the seaports strung into a necklace.
In them is kindness to the visitor, and in them
وَبَنُوهَاand her sons وَجَدْتُI found مِنof كَرَمِnobility of الأخلاَcharacter (start of الْأَخْلَاقِ)

And her sons—I found such nobility of character
Is propriety that turns the uncouth wise
in them that I cannot reckon or count.
Their elder, in him is wisdom under the light of old age
فِيهِمُin them اللطفُkindness بِالنَّزِيلِto the guest وَفِيهِمْand in them

أَدَبٌcourtesy يَسْتَهْوِيَcaptivates الْعَدوَّthe enemy الالَدَّاthe most implacable
In them is kindness to the guest, and in them
That glows and returns the misguided aright
a courtesy that wins over the most implacable foe.
And their youth, in the arena of diligence, are the sharpest minded
شَيْخُهمْtheir elder فِيهِin him حِكْمَةٌwisdom تَحْتَbeneath ضَوْءِthe light of الشَيْgray hair (start of الشَّيْبِ)

Their elder has wisdom that, beneath the light of gray hair,
And the most just in purpose
shines, turning error into right guidance.
And in chastity every blossom among them
وَفَتَاهمْand their young man فِيin حَلْبَةِthe arena of الجِدِّearnest effort أَذْكَىkeenest النَّاpeople (start of النَّاسِ)

And their young man, in the arena of earnest endeavor, is keenest among people
Enlightens the mind like the dawn and guides perfectly
in heart, and most just among people in purpose.
May your prosperity last and may God extend
وَمِنَand through الطُّهرِpurity كُلُّevery زَهْرَاءَradiant woman فِيهِمْamong them

And through purity, every radiant woman among them
For each of you happiness and blessings always
illumines the mind like morning, with still surer guidance.
دَامَmay it endure إِقْبَالُكُمْyour prosperity وَمَدَّand may He extend لِكُلٍّfor each
مِنْكُمof you اللهٌGod فِيin السَّعادَةِhappiness مَدَّاat length
May your prosperity endure, and may God extend for each
of you the span of happiness.
