He who laughed and played yesterday

Now lies fallen, bereft of cheer.

We miss his acting, which brought together

    All that charmed in gesture and in speech;

    مِنْ فمِهِ فِي الْجَهْرِ وَالْهَمْسِ

    And that delivery, so delightful,

    From his mouth, aloud and in whispers;

And that alternation in his art

Between clarity of mind and madness.

He has vanished from the world, yet

He has been cured of its head-splitting pain.

Many a dancer at its wedding may well

Have been the most wretched at the wedding.

He has reached evening—but why say this of a man

Who will see neither morning nor evening again?

In a free abode whose justice has banished

All good fortune and ill fortune.

What do you suppose he recounts in the darkness

Of his resting place, to jinn and humankind?

Or has a slumber he tasted struck him mute

    Among lifeless, speechless boon companions?

Alas for him, and for one who follows

In his wake, stumbling over despair.

Alive, yet nothing in what remains of his body

Is alive save a remnant of sensation.

He delivers to you, with what strength remains,

The last lesson he can give.

In the faint trembling of his voice

Is a distant reverberation of a soul's echo.

    Your generosity sustains his soul

On the crumbling brink of destitution.

Disappointment drove him from his kingdom

Among the Romans, Bedouin Arabs, and Persians.

And one who falls from his illusion

Is just like a ruler falling from his throne.

O noble ones who, with their bounty, comforted

Children in the depths of misery,

In whatever land your like have lived,

    Hardship holds no harm.

No thirsty person is left to die in your quarter

So long as any water remains in the cup.
