أمَاتَhave ... died? أُولَئِكَthose الجُنْدُthe soldiers الْكِرَامُnoble
وَلَمْand did not يَثْبُتْendure لَهُمْfor them أثَرٌa trace مُقَامُlasting
Have those noble soldiers died,
Those brave soldiers perished,
with no enduring trace of them left,
And no trace of them remained.
سِوَىexcept قَوْلِthe saying of الرُّوَاةِthe chroniclers حَيُوْاthey lived لِيَقْضُواso they might fulfill
مُنَىthe wishes of رَجُلٍa man كَبِيرٍgreat ثُمَّthen نَامُواthey slept
save the chroniclers' saying: they lived to fulfill
Except the words of storytellers that they lived to fulfill
a great man's wishes, then slept?
The purpose of a great man, then fell asleep.
تَفَانَوْاthey sacrificed themselves فِيin بِنَاءٍbuilding اسْمٍa name عَظِيمٍmighty
وَمَاand not أسْمَاؤُهُمْtheir names إلاَّexcept الرَّغَامُdust
They sacrificed themselves to build a mighty name,
They were devoted to building a mighty name,
while their own names are nothing but dust.
Though their own names were but murmurs.
يُسَخِّرُHe subjects رَبُّكَyour Lord الدُّنْيَاthe world لِفَانٍto a mortal
وَفِيand in الدُّنْيَاthe world وَفِيهِand in him لَهُfor Him مَرَامُa purpose
Your Lord subjects the world to a mortal,
Your Lord makes the world subservient to the ephemeral,
and in the world and in him He has a purpose.
And for the ephemeral and for Himself He has purpose.
فَيُلْقِيso He bestows مِنْof مَحَبَّتِهِHis love عَلَيْهِupon him
وَتُوشِكُand almost أنْto تُوحِّدَهُworship him as the One الأنَامُhumankind
So He bestows upon him something of His love,
So He casts some of His love upon it,
and humankind almost worships him as the One.
And mankind nearly deifies it.
هُمُthey بِفَخَارِهِthrough his glory نَهَضُواthey rose وَقَامُواand they stood
Thus did soldiers love Napoleon;
Thus did Napoleon's troops love him,
they rose and stood through his glory.
Rising for his glory, standing tall.
أبَالِسُdevils لاَnot تُرَدُّare repelled وَلاَand not تُلاَقَىare confronted
مَلاَئِكَangels لاnot تُصَدُّare thwarted وَلاَand not تُضَامُare wronged
Devils who could neither be repelled nor faced;
Invincible armies, that would not be turned back or opposed,
angels who could neither be thwarted nor wronged.
Angelic hosts that would not be blocked or joined together.
أعِزَّةُmighty men يَوْمِon the day of أُسْتِرْلِتْسَAusterlitz كَانُواthey were

On the day of Austerlitz, the mighty men were
The brave heroes of Waterloo were few,
few, while their foes were many and immense.
While the enemy was vast in number.
تَلاَقَوْاthey met مُقْبِلِينَadvancing عَلَىwith اشْتِياقٍlonging
وَلَكِنْand yet لاَno وِدَادَaffection وَلاَand no سَلاَمُpeace
They met, advancing with longing,
They met head-on out of passion,
yet there was neither affection nor peace.
But without affection or peace.
وَكَانَتْand was قُبْلَةُthe kiss of الأشْواقِlongings فِيهِمْamong them
ضِرَاماًa blaze لاَnot تَقَرُّrest عَلَيْهِupon it هَامُheads
And the kiss of longing among them was
Their passionate kiss was for them
a blaze upon which no head could rest.
A piercing blade that would not settle upon them.
وَطَالَand lasted long وَمَاand not شَفَىslaked لهمfor them غَلِيلاًa burning thirst
مِنَfrom الوَجْدِpassion التَّعَانُقُthe embracing وَاللِّزَامُand grappling
And long it lasted, yet it did not slake their thirst
Their embrace did not cure or soothe
born of passion—this embracing and grappling.
Their fervent longing and urge to cling.
فَلَمْso not يَكُwas مُجْدِيَbeneficial to الرُّوسِthe Russians التَّفَانِيself-sacrifice

So self-sacrifice did not avail the Russians,
The Russian tenacity was fruitless,
nor did valor and assault avail the allies.
And the allies were not mighty in attack.
وَلاَand not عَصَمَprotected الصَّقِيعُthe frost وَكَانَand there were مِنْهُfrom it
مَعَاقِلُstrongholds خَلْفَهَاbehind them لَهُمُfor them اعْتِصَامُrefuge
Nor did the frost protect them, though it formed
The frost did not protect them, though behind it
strongholds behind which they sheltered.
Were fortresses in which they took shelter.
وَقُيِّضَand was granted لِلفَرَنْسِيِّينَto the French نَصْرٌa victory
أتَاهُمُcame to them فَوْقَbeyond مَاwhat ظَنُّواthey expected وَرامُواand they sought
And victory was granted to the French;
Victory was ordained for the French
it came beyond what they had expected and sought.
Beyond what they thought and desired.
فَطَابُواso they rejoiced فِيduring الغَبُوْقِthe evening drinking بِهِin it نُفُوساًsouls
ورَاقَand pleased لَهُمْthem مَعَalong with الظَّفَرِvictory المُدَامُwine
So at their evening drinking their spirits rejoiced in it,
They were delighted by it, their souls
and alongside triumph, the wine delighted them.
Intoxicated, and victory made sweet for them.
وَحَدَّثَand told قَوْمَهُhis people الصُّعْلُوكُthe poor man مِنْهُمُamong them
بِمَاof what كَانَتْhad been وَقَائِعُهُhis battles الجِسَامُmighty
And the poor man among them told his fellows
The rogue among them told his people
what his mighty battles had been.
Of its momentous events.
وَكَانَand there was فَتىًa youth لَهُhe had سِيمَاthe bearing of زَعِيمٍa leader
يُنْكِّرُهُmakes him unrecognizable التَّفَرُّدُsolitude وَالظَّلاَمُand darkness
And there was a youth with a leader's bearing,
He was a young man, marked as a leader,
made unrecognizable by solitude and darkness.
Though solitude and darkness obscured him.
عَرِيضُbroad الجَبْهَةِthe forehead الغَرَّاءِradiant يَبْدُوappears

Broad was his radiant brow; there appeared
Broad of luminous brow, from which
upon it hair like clouds grown thin.
Hair flowed like clouds' cascading showers.
حَدِيدُkeen النَّاظِرَيْنِthe two eyes إذَاwhen أُثِيرَاthey were roused
فَمِصْباحَانِthen two lamps مِلْؤُهُمَاthe contents of both ضِرَامُflame
Keen were his two eyes; when roused,
His eyes, when stirred, two steel lamps
they were two lamps filled with flame.
Filled with piercing light.
تَرَاهُsees him العَيْنُthe eye جَبَّاراًa giant عَظِيماًmighty
لِهَيْبَتِهِfor his majesty وَإنْand though قَصُرَis short الْقَوَامُstature
The eye sees him as a mighty giant,
The eye sees him as a giant,
for his majesty, though short of stature.
Awesome though of modest stature.
يَمُرُّhe passes بِهِمْamong them وَقَدْand already ثَمِلُواthey grew drunk افتِخَاراًwith pride
وَإعْيَاءًand exhaustion فَكُلُّهُمُso all of them نِيَامُasleep
He passes among them; they have grown drunk with pride
He passes them as they swell with pride
and exhaustion, so all of them are asleep.
And exhaustion, so all of them doze.
إذَاwhen تَعِبَgrow weary الجُنُودُthe soldiers فَلَيْسَthen it is not بِدْعٌa marvel
بِأَنْthat لاَnot يَتْعَبَgrow weary المَلِكُthe king الهُمَامُvaliant
When the soldiers grow weary, it is no wonder
When soldiers grow tired, it is no wonder
that the valiant king does not tire.
The tireless king of ambition remains alert.
فَطَافَso he made rounds بِهِمْamong them وَبِالجَرْحَىand among the wounded افْتِقَاداًto check on them
وَكَانَand was مَبَرَّةًa kindness مِنْهُfrom him اللِّمَامُthe brief visit
So he went round to check on them and the wounded,
He circled them and the wounded, checking on them,
and his brief visit was an act of kindness.
Tenderly caring for the injured.
وَفَارَقَهُمْand he left them إلَىto حَيْثُwhere اسْتَقَرَّتْcame to rest
مِنَof القَتْلَىthe slain الْجَمَاجِمُthe skulls وَالْعِظَامُand the bones
And he left them for the place where rested
He left them to where the skulls and bones
the skulls and bones of the slain.
Of the dead were piled up.
يُشَاهِدُhe observes مَاwhat جَنَاهُhe has wrought it قَرِيرَcontented عَيْنٍeye
وَلاَand no حَرَجٌscruple عَلَيْهِupon him وَلاَand no مَلاَمُblame
He gazes with contented eyes at what he has wrought,
He surveyed what his hand had wrought, untroubled,
with neither qualm upon him nor reproach.
Beyond reproach or blame.
فَماthen nothing اسْتَرْعَاهُcaught his attention إلاَّexcept صَوْتُthe voice of عَانٍa sufferer
بِجَانِبِهِbeside him يُصَارِعُهُwrestles with him الْحِمَامُdeath
Then only a sufferer's voice caught his attention;
Only the voice of a sufferer broke his reverie,
beside him, death was grappling with the man.
As a dove fought at his side.
دَنَاhe drew near لِيُغِيثَهُto help him فَأَمَالَthen bent رَأْساًa head
لَهُbefore it عَنَتِbowed الْقَيَاصِرَةُthe Caesars العِظَامُgreat
He drew near to help him, bending a head
He approached to give aid, and tilted
before which the great Caesars had bowed.
A head weighed down by the mighty crowns.
وَأَلْقَىand set down رُكْبَتَيْهِhis two knees عَلَىupon صَعِيدٍearth
يُمَازِجُmingles with تُرْبَهُits soil الدَّمُblood وَالحُطامُand wreckage
And he set his two knees upon the ground,
He knelt upon the dusty earth
where blood and wreckage mingled with the soil.
Where blood and ruins mingled.
عَتِيٌّhaughty مَاnever جَثَاknelt للهِto God إلاَّexcept
وَمَرْكَعُهُand his kneeling-place عَلَىupon عَمَدٍpillars يُقَامُis erected
Haughty, he had never knelt to God unless
He who never knelt except to God,
his kneeling-place was raised upon pillars.
And whose kneeling propped up pillars.
فَحَلَّso he unfastened عَنِfrom الْفَتَىthe youth ثَوْباًa garment خَضِيباًblood-stained
كَأَّنَّas though ثُقُوبَهُits holes فِيهِin it كِلاَمُwounds
Then he unfastened the youth's blood-stained garment,
He removed a bloodied garment from the lad,
as though its holes were wounds within it.
As though its holes spoke.
وَأَبْصَرَand saw فِيin تَرَائِبِهِhis chest bones صُدُوعاًfissures
عَلَىwith دَخَلٍinternal damage يَعِزُّis difficult لَهَاfor them الْتِئَامُhealing
And he saw fissures in his chest bones,
He saw in its tatters wounds
with inward damage that made them hard to heal.
Upon a body too weak to heal.
فَلَمَاthen when ثَابَreturned لِلعَانِيto the sufferer شُعُورٌconsciousness
نَفَاهُhad banished it الضَّعْفُweakness عَنْهُfrom him وَالسَّقَامُand sickness
Then, when the sufferer regained consciousness,
When consciousness returned to the anguished one,
which weakness and sickness had banished from him,
Weakness and illness receded.
وَأدْرَكَand recognized مَنْwho بِجَانِبِهِbeside him تَرَاءَىappeared
بِطَرْفَيْهِin his two eyes الكَلِيلَيْنِweary اضْطِرَامُa blaze
and recognized who was beside him, there appeared
He saw with his two weary eyes
a blaze in his two weary eyes.
The one who stood beside him.
أَرَادَhe wished إبَانَةًto express عَمَّاabout what تَنَادَتْcried out together
جَوَارِحُهُhis limbs بِهِwith it فَعَصَىbut rebelled الْكَلاَمُspeech
He wished to express what had been proclaimed
He wanted to confess what his features
by his limbs, but speech rebelled.
Conveyed, but speech failed him.
فَغَضَّso he lowered الطَّرْفَthe gaze ثُمَّthen رَنَاlooked intently فَأَلْقَىthen cast off
مُفَاضَتَهُhis ample coat of mail يُضِيءُshines بِهَاupon it وِسَامُa medal
So he lowered his gaze, then looked intently, and cast off
Then he looked away and softened, shedding
his coat of mail, upon which a medal shone.
Tears that illuminated his medallions.
فَجَمَّعَso he gathered مَاwhat تَبَقَّىremained مِنْof قِوَاهُhis strength
وَأَسْعَدَهُand helped him عَلَىin النُّطْقُspeaking الذِّمَامُloyalty
Then he gathered what remained of his strength,
He gathered all that remained of his strength,
and loyalty helped him speak.
Eloquence empowering his speech.
فَصَاحَso he cried فِدَاكَa ransom for you يَاO مَلِكِيmy king حَيَاتِيmy life
وَمَاتَand he died وَفِيand upon مُحَيَّاهُhis face ابْتِسَامُa smile
So he cried: 'My life be your ransom, O my king!'
He cried, "You are the life of my life, my king!"
And he died, with a smile upon his face.
And he died with a smile upon his lips.
