Have mercy, O noble callers!
My edge has dulled; even a keen sword may grow blunt.
فِيمَwhy تَسْتَنْشِدُونَنِيdo you ask me to recite poetry بَعْدَafter أَنْthat طَاbegins 'grew long'

a silence, when the reproachers have ceased?

الصَّوْتُ وَكَانَتْ تُشْجَى بِهِ الأَقْوَامُ
Among those of old, my voice was the very
voice, and peoples were moved to sorrow by it.

Then those eras passed away, and still
the years exchanged their echoes like gifts.

Yet loved ones asked me to speak openly
on a day of charity—so let inspiration lend its aid.

And let me stand for generosity where they wished,
and let them have from my response what they sought.

ease, while in the West are eyes that never sleep:

the days have overlooked its frontiers.

Your night is radiant of brow, so that
darkness almost ceases to resemble darkness.

No, by the sanctity of brotherhood, we have found no pleasure
in life—as though security were peace.

In calamities, people are but one family;
their ordeals forge ties of kinship between them.
