    Hair is the emblem of a maiden’s pride.

    Its beholder says, “How lovely!”

    أَوْ أَرْسَلَتْهُ اسْتَطَالَ ذَيْلاَ

    If she binds it up, it stands as a crown;

    Or, if she lets it loose, it lengthens into a train.

    يَطْغَى عُبَاباً يَهْمُرُ سَيْلاَ

    It laughs in radiance, frowns in shadow;

    It surges in billows, pours down in a torrent.

    Both its hues are equally beautiful,

    Yet people divide into two camps in their preference.

    They call it “West” if it is the sun,

    They call it “East” if it is night.

    O little girl whose hair is like musk,

    With pure gold poured over it in a shower,

    You have united their two beauties, so be—

    Lili, if you wish—or Layla, if you wish.
