Hail, defenders of Belgium, O lions!

    These feats are without precedent.

A tyrant came upon you late at night, seeking to lure you

From defending your homeland; no sound judgment restrains him.

To violate, as his ambitions desire,

The sanctities of the covenant, undeterred by reproach.

He was deceived by the overwhelming numbers assembled

In his army, the abundant weapons and equipment.

He did not know that, even if his cannon struck

The firmest fortresses, crushing them as they blazed,

And even if he marched within a clamorous host,

Spreading like fire or surging onward like waves,

All the black instruments of destruction could not grant him

The necks of a few brave men endowed with endurance.

Wilhelm assailed the right, emboldened by

Two ailments within him: ambition and envy.

Can he defeat the right, even if his legions grew

So vast that space and time could not contain their bounds?

Indeed, courage and the victory worthy of it

Are wrought by valor, not by numbers.

How, then, could he, when all mankind has unanimously resolved

To battle the tyrant, and united?

The British denied passage over the seas to

His ships: he has neither provisions nor clothing.

    فَكَانَ خَيْرَ مُجِيرٍ ذَلِكَ المَدَدُ

    And with illustrious detachments they supported their neighbor;

That reinforcement proved the finest protector.

They were few in number, but their deeds surpassed all counting,

So that even one far away recalls them and trembles.

    لِلّهِ فِتْيَتِهَا وَالمَجْدُ مَا مَجدُوا

    France grew mighty through them, beside her own young men;

God bless her young men and all the glory they have won!

They battle without gentleness or weariness

Against Nimrod, until throne and pillars fall.

The Russians approach him from another flank,

As no friend approaches: their nearness is bitter hostility.

    نَاهِيكَ بِالْجَيْشِ إِذْ يَحْدُوهُ معْتَقَدُ

    An immense army, patient, obedient, yet unyielding;

What an army, when conviction drives it onward!

It hews away at Austria's liver, to leave her

Behind it with neither body nor liver.

Until, when it assails the Germans, it attacks them at dawn,

And their realm, after the forces unite, lies scattered.

In aid of its Serbian allies, who captivated

Men's minds with their exploits and their exertions,

And the band of mountaineers who showed

How one who will not bow takes vengeance when oppressed.

Wilhelm, you who recklessly hurled your nation

Into annihilation—evil is the pool you approach!

The nights pass, and the day of your downfall draws near,

For the corruption you and they have wrought upon the world.

    أَفْنُوا النَّفائِسَ لاَ تُبْقُوا وَتَقْتَصِدُوا

    Tear down churches, crush universities in hatred;

Destroy precious treasures; neither spare nor hold back.

    وَإِنْ تَفُتْكُمْ فُنُونٌ مِنْ أَذىً فَجِدُوا

    Banish mercy, and be cruel to your nature's utmost;

And if any forms of harm escape you, strive for them.

And may you rejoice in every house filled with outpourings of grief,

    And mourning for the dead, and a heart consumed by sorrow;

And every garden whose verdure has withered,

And whose tuneful birds lament after their singing.

Tomorrow he will render an account admitting no evasion:

Among the worst that tomorrow holds in store for oppressors.

Just retribution for a criminal through whose ambitions

Misery and hardship overwhelmed all humanity.

He marched to conquer the world, filled with wrath,

Heedless of the one angered, who also harbored wrath.

Above him rose a crown of wishes made from broken crowns,

Massive in its fashioning, beyond any hand's skill.

He had not taken one step before he stumbled—and behold,

Amid the bloodied rubble, his crown lay in shreds.

Sons of al-Sham, may God exalt your company!

How many a praiseworthy endeavor and helping hand are yours!

You cherished your kinship with the sons of Egypt,

Just as you showed compassion for the wounded, however far away.

May God greet you, a people endowed with generosity,

Who have never left their accustomed heights of nobility.

    تِلْكَ الْفَعَائِلُ لِمْ يَسْبِقْ بِهَا أَحَدُ

    No one exaggerated who said of you that you are lions;

    Those deeds are without precedent.

Albert, O sovereign whose virtues have shown

How eminence, honor, and homeland are preserved!

    كَذَا الشَّجاعَةُ وَالإِقْدَامُ وَالصَّيدُ

    Such is gentleness in its most splendid manifestations;

Such are courage, boldness, and majestic pride.

You aided your people in the grinding war, and

Your helping hand never failed them when peace was established.

In every matter you advance and support them,

With counsel and effort: you are the head and the arm.

Those at home have the same share as those abroad, for they

Are your sons, whether near in dwelling or far away.

The eye of care stays wakeful in guarding them,

Through the eye of him beneath whose shade they found happiness.

And their happiness in life was increased by having

A queen who led them to the pure water she herself drinks.

She is not the eldest among them, yet has never ceased to be

A tender mother, consoling them and watching over them.

And through upright conduct she refined their women,

Who, having emulated her, bear no crookedness.

    يَزِينُهُنَّ سُمُوُّ الرَّأْيِ وَالسَّدَدُ

    Her radiant adornments revealed her virtues;

Lofty judgment and rectitude adorn them.

O you two sovereigns, celebrated by

Egypt's great lord and the noble people around him,

Who from the dawn of time have been known for kindness,

Their custom of honoring merit is as it has always been.

You have seen in their outward joy at your presence

A reflection of their inward love and their conviction.

This spring, its glad tidings have come in harmony

With what delights the eyes as it arrives.

It offered its fragrance and displayed its delicate adornment,

And within it the tuneful bird offered beautiful praise.
