exemplars of mutual affection and kindness.

A perfect pairing of virtue

وَاخْتَرْ أَعَزَّ بَني الْحِمَى

وَاخْتَرْ أَعَزَّ بَني الْحِمَى

لِلْصِّهْرِ إِنْ تَخْتَرْ لِصِهْرْ

لِلْصِّهْرِ إِنْ تَخْتَرْ لِصِهْرْ

And choose the most honored of the homeland's sons

And choose the dearest of sons

as a son-in-law, if you choose a son-in-law,

For a son-in-law if you choose one

مِنْ كُلِّ كَفُوءٍ بِالْخِصَالِ

مِنْ كُلِّ كَفُوءٍ بِالْخِصَالِ

لِذَاتِ أَخْلاَقٍ وَطُهرْ

لِذَاتِ أَخْلاَقٍ وَطُهرْ

from all who are worthy in character

Of all matching in qualities

of a woman of virtue and purity.

Of virtuous nature and purity

فَيَكُونُ حوْلَ نِظامِ شَمْ

فَيَكُونُ حوْلَ نِظامِ شَمْ

سِكَ حَيْثُ دَارَ نِظَامُ زَهرْ

سِكَ حَيْثُ دَارَ نِظَامُ زَهرْ

Then around the orbit of your sun—

To be around the system of resolve

wherever it turns—will be a ring of flowers.

Where resolve's abode did flower

عُمْرٌ يُضَاعَفُ هَكَذَا

عُمْرٌ يُضَاعَفُ هَكَذَا

فِي الْخَيْرِ يَسْوَى أَلْفَ عُمْرْ

فِي الْخَيْرِ يَسْوَى أَلْفَ عُمْرْ

A life is doubled in this way;

A life doubled this way

in goodness, it is worth a thousand lives.

In good deeds worth a thousand lives

للهِ فِي حَفْلِ الزَّفَافِ

للهِ فِي حَفْلِ الزَّفَافِ

وَرَوْعَةِ الْيَوْمِ الأَغَرْ

وَرَوْعَةِ الْيَوْمِ الأَغَرْ

Praise be to God at the wedding celebration

To God in the wedding feast

and in the splendor of the radiant day:

أُوْدِيتُ فِي ثَوْبِ الْعَرُوسِ

أُوْدِيتُ فِي ثَوْبِ الْعَرُوسِ

كَأَنَّهُ لَمَحَاتُ دُرْ

كَأَنَّهُ لَمَحَاتُ دُرْ

Odette in the bride's gown—

I was clothed in the bride’s gown

as though it were gleams of pearls.

As if glimmers of pearls

بِخُيُوطِهِ الْمُتَأَلِّقَاتِ

بِخُيُوطِهِ الْمُتَأَلِّقَاتِ

تَمَاسَكَتْ قَطَرَاتُ فَجْرْ

تَمَاسَكَتْ قَطَرَاتُ فَجْرْ

By its gleaming threads

With its shimmering threads

drops of dawn were held together.

Dew drops joined together

جُلِيَتْ مَحَاسِنُهَا بِهِ

جُلِيَتْ مَحَاسِنُهَا بِهِ

وَنَسِيمُهَا نفحَاتُ عِطْرْ

وَنَسِيمُهَا نفحَاتُ عِطْرْ

Her charms were revealed by it,

Her virtues revealed by it

and her breeze, wafts of perfume.

And its breeze, fragrant breaths

نِعْمَ الهُدَى لَنا بِهِ

نِعْمَ الهُدَى لَنا بِهِ

فَطِنٌ كَرِيمُ الأَصْلِ حُرْ

فَطِنٌ كَرِيمُ الأَصْلِ حُرْ

What fine guidance we have through him—

What fine guidance for us in him

a discerning man, noble of lineage and free.
