هَلْdo تَعْرِفُونَyou know أَحَدَاanyone
هَلْ تَعْرِفُونَ أَحَدَا
أَحَرَّmore aflame مِنِّيthan me كَبِدَاin the liver
أَحَرَّ مِنِّي كَبِدَا
Do you know anyone
Do you know anyone
whose liver burns more fiercely than mine?
With a more burning liver than mine?
أُمْسِيI reach evening فَأَلْقَىand I encounter نَكَدَاmisery

أَضْحَىI reach morning فَأَلْقَىand I encounter نَكَدَاmisery
أَضْحَى فَأَلْقَى نَكَدَا
I reach evening, and encounter misery;
I spend my evenings in sorrow
I reach morning, and encounter misery.
I greet the dawn in sorrow

أُحَيِّي الدُّجَى مُسْهَدَا
I fold away my day, exhausted;
I end my days exhausted
I greet the darkness, sleepless.
And wake to the gloom worried

I, the patient, the steadfast—what
I used to be patient and steadfast
ails me? I have lost my fortitude.
Now I have lost all patience
