    مَا خَلاَ مِنْكَ قَلْبُهَا المَشْغُولُ

    Death has triumphed, and life is bereaved;

Her preoccupied heart has never been empty of you.

In her broad, surging sea there is a heartbeat,

Whose wave stretches to the farthest reach.

After lending it support; now it forsakes it.

    Hope has returned there disappointed.

And building and the laying of foundations have collapsed.

Alas that it should lie sheathed in the dust—

    The drawn sword of resolve!

When a great-hearted man dies, however long

His years have been, death has come too soon.

    لَيْسَ بِدْعاً مَا الرَّاحِلُونَ شُكُولُ

    Egypt weeps for you, and Syria is distraught;

No wonder: the departed are not alike.

Between two dead men of wealth,

Distinction may reach its utmost extent.

That one passes without a greeting; for this one,

Wailing does not suffice his eulogists.

Is it strange, when you are the marvel of both lands,

That souls should melt with grief?

Patience is beautiful only in other circumstances.

Every complaint, and silenced everyone who speaks.

And let stupefaction freeze the onlookers.

    On whom a nation relied?

Have you seen the dignitaries processing with a coffin,

    Their chief borne upon it?

And the needy carrying their father's bier,

Almost moved along by their kisses?

    A heart consigned to sorrow.

The Nile flows, no longer matched, after

Today, in its flood by its brother—bounty.

O my namesake—thus you used to call

Me, and I you; the generous man keeps close ties.

Every affection changes, but my affection

For you, as long as I live, is steadfast and unchanging.

Never holds back, even though ill.

We have come; here are the companions,

And here is the gathering-place—but where is Khalil?

Where are those manners, so outstanding in wit?

Where is the conversation that was wine itself?

Where is that splendor, that radiant countenance,

And that luster which never changes?

Expressed the meanings of his heart?

Fresh; only by conjecture could fading be seen in him.

Unchanged in any aspect of his state.

And beginning the journey was arrival.

Returning from it with his opponent defeated!

That day was a day indeed, and good fortune had in it

Splendid, awe-inspiring blazes and white fetlock markings.

    يَوْمَ لاَ يَعْرِفُ الخَلِيلَ الخَلِيلُ

    Tell, too, of Khalil's benevolence

    On the day when friend does not recognize friend;

His name recorded at its opening?

O full moon; and overflow, O Nile.

    And sway, O polished sword.

Then what of the one free to choose and held accountable?

Rapture, that you are a man of word and deed.

A standing such as this is no small matter.

Came to dwell in humankind, it dwelt in you.

And every virtue has its messenger.

Accursed be money, unless it is redeemed

By its owner's purpose and by giving.

What, then, of wealth that, for a band of men, was built

By their stinginess, deceit, and sponging?

The East's calamity is its upstarts, who deserve

To be outweighed by locust larvae and rise in the scales.

Who benefits others; how far is excess from excellence!

Exalted, nor would their eminence be abasement.

Duty; let the heedless take warning and wake.

Is a head, while those who withhold are tails.

Despite his gold and silver, and the ignorant stays ignorant.

Roused the rabble against it is surely the miser.

The basest of peoples is the one

Among whom the contemptible miser is excused.

Such talk is the bane of noble deeds.

And it is better that the good deed not be proclaimed.

The rarest of people is an unknown benefactor?

Relieve as many privations as you can, and protect

The honor of a free man whose covering remains drawn.

    أَنَا بِالحَمْدِ مَا اشْتَهَيْتَ كَفِيلُ

    Heal the poor man's wound and wipe the grit from his eye;

I will guarantee you all the praise you desire.

God Himself has required praise from

The servant; what can the faultfinder say about that?

And why do the angels blow into the

Trumpet, and what are glorification and recitation for?

Do you suppose the Creator of creation was one whom

Piping and drumming could carry away?

It is a practice He established, seeking to guide creation

Through it; fabricating it is misguidance.

Return to God, O Khalil, for no

Rationalization diminishes gratitude in His sight.

You have exchanged mortality for immortality

In bliss—and how welcome that exchange!

So consolation, O nation from whom has vanished

    Its gracious face and its venerable leader;

And consolation, O finest wife, whom it grieves

    For all her remaining years that her beloved has departed;

And consolation, you two who have lost the finest brother:

    May you both live long after him;

And consolation, his companions, for a brother you have sent

    Ahead, who was an excellent comrade;

And upon you be peace in the grave, and mercy

Which a pouring cloud rains down.

If the living could endure for the sake of merit,

You would endure; but every living being passes away.
