Dawn has gone out in the eyes of inspiration,

And an eyelid of darkness has enfolded the radiance.

And it is as though the sun of genius were shrouded

In murk, after its rays had blossomed.

But for its veil's translucence, revealing a pale gleam

Of its light, it would not appear to the seeker.

It revisits us, while memories seem like

The traces of a wondrous dream.

And has any vanished truth endured

    Except through treasured illusions?

My grief for the noble friend, whose faithfulness

Since our first acquaintance was beyond reproach!

In life I never found him other than distinguished,

Gazing upon the world with a lofty eye.

What sweet traits I came to know

In him, and what truthfulness and care for bonds of honor!

I seek an elegy for him; my thought flashes

With sorrow—but where is the cloud's downpour?

No poetry remains to me, nor prose, for

The passage of years has ravaged me.

Mourning has been cast upon insight and reason

By the loss of him suffered by inkwells and pens.

How many, in deserts and towns since his passing,

Are the sleepless eyes and bleeding hearts!

    وَشَكَاةُ لُبْنَانٍ شَكَاةُ الشَّامِ

    There, the comforter and the comforted are one;

And Lebanon's lament is the lament of al-Sham.

Gone is the master of writers; and in

Reviving the stature of Arabic—the tongue of ḍād—what a master he was!

So it was as though—though the age was not its own—

The freshness of its days had been restored to it.

Gone is the peer of its matchless poets,

Of its pre-Islamic age and of the age of Islam.

He matched the stallions of verse and did not fall short of them

In the arena of eloquence and mastery.

What a gulf between the poet, naturally gifted in

His creative work, and the gleaning versifier!

The Arab world, from end to end,

Shows its sorrow, its banners lowered.

It weeps for the prince of its eloquence; it weeps for the champion

Of its champions in the charge and in daring.

It weeps for the self-made man, great in his own right,

And the lord, son of an illustrious lord.

He never ceased to fight in its defense, and his aim

Through all he endured was the noblest of aims,

Until the enemies withdrew from its homelands

And the Arabs' standing rose among the nations.

So he lay at rest, his eyes serene, his contentment full,

With the reward for the pains he had endured.

O Shakib, enough for glory is what I have been told

Of your exalted standing, east and west.

In every Arab land is preserved forever

Your memory, with reverence and veneration.

    فَاسْتَقْبِلِ النُّعْمَى بِدَارِ سَلامِ

    Your life was an abode of war through which you passed;

So welcome bliss in an abode of peace.
