    Baghdad—descend, then, O eagle!

No adornment today, and no gladness.

You have returned with him for whom the vast expanse grew narrow,

for a grave to take him into its keeping.

Rest, then, from the heavy burdens imposed

by his resolve upon those dust-gray wings.

He was ever a rover of skies, in which

he inscribed a line, followed by another line,

immortalizing whatever he wished to immortalize

in glory, until the book was sealed.

He made a homecoming granted to no man,

however exalted his standing in the world.

    وَمَرْكَبَاهُ البَحْرُ وَالبَرُّ

    In West and East there is a gathering for him;

his two mounts are the sea and the land.

And at times a bird carries him,

with a blaze within it and a panting breath.

And the funeral throng stands in a place

so cramped, as though it were the gathering of the Resurrection.

An honor no other has attained,

    as far as remembrance reaches.

    Alas! The valiant man whom

the deep sea and the desert spared,

who plunged into war's terror, then returned,

with victory smiling upon his banners,

near whom the birds felt at ease,

and whose returns the bright stars grew used to,

took shelter in a nest upon a lofty height,

and the nest betrayed him in his safe retreat.

A calamity unique in its kind,

as though its novelty made it a virgin grief.

Death assumed through it a shape

that horror rendered hideous beyond recognition.

So, from its terror, you see no sober person

except as one whom drunkenness has shaken.

How grievous are sorrow and its torment

of the soul, when terror mingles with it!

The king, the pole-star, lay in death, when no

dwelling was without him, nor any region.

If Adnan weeps, how fitting for her!

Is there any loss beyond what has befallen her?

Let her hold her mourning assembly, embracing

all her sons, for she is justified.

He has left her—he whose bounty to her

gratitude is powerless to repay in full.

By his light her deep darkness was rent,

and dawn was restored from its wandering.

And her dominion was renewed after

the very vestige failed to recognize itself within her.

O son of Hussein—and to Hussein belongs

the honor of her newly restored glory.

And O brother of the two kindred shoots from a spreading tree,

whose fruit age after age has ennobled.

A lineage whose stock derives from Hashim,

the very stock of the lords of the East.

You were her solace for the loss of the sire,

as were your brothers, choice and illustrious.

Today ravening death strikes again through you,

as though a blood-feud spurred it on.

Why its unjust assault, and what is your sin?

Is the Arabs' awakening itself the sin?

Is it when you brought Iraq its hopes,

with government by counsel and the homeland free,

    and when no colonizer retained

power to forbid or command her people,

and when the nations of ḍād hope

to be united by covenant and bond,

that parting snatches you away before middle age,

before your fresh green bough has withered?

Whoever seeks in this world an example of what

the keen-witted, bold man can attain in it,

and of how he wrests from his age

a prized treasure that time withholds,

let him take the life of a king who aimed

    at a goal, with hardship even in his means;

attaining it was hard, and his supporters

were very few, while his enemies were many.

He rose to a throne; when it stumbled

beneath him, and no support stood firm for him,

he rose to another, his wrist not

feeble, nor was he crushed by the burden.

And what prized goal, however distant,

have faith and patience not brought near?

    Baghdad—glory there returned to

its former state; after much toil vengeance was exacted.

There Faisal was granted his desire,

and his troubled days offered their apology.

in prudent judgment of him, nor were they deceived.

And their pledge was strengthened by their faith

that he was their mainstay and their treasure.

A miracle wrought by a daring man,

neither unsound in judgment nor inexperienced.

    Whoever reads its story imagines

that what he is reading is poetry.

Yes, it is poetry, but it is

    tangible truth, not magic.

The enemy's horses were no strangers to Faisal,

as thrusts hacked into the bases of their throats.

And his swords never appeared amid the battle-dust

without a mouth smiling at their sight.

There were occasions when he alone attained

what a vast army cannot secure.

Judgment aided him in them, where no

white swords or brown spears could aid him.

The East's most precious treasures lay in his soul,

yet his palm was empty of a single dirham.

But his loftiest conquest was not

    what charge or retreat had seized by force;

rather, it was what his resolve prepared,

along with his steadfast courage and thought.

Say what you will of Faisal: he is

a sea from which pearls are drawn.

Ask those who know him; learn his worth

when bounty is hoped for or harm feared.

    Manhood perfected: no wonder, then,

that sweet and bitter are drawn from it.

A gentle nature is found in him

at its proper time, and a rugged nature too.

He is devoted to good; in his nature

evil takes effort, if it must be done.

    وَلِلوُلاَةِ النَّائِلُ الغمْرُ

    For foes, the engulfing flood of his might;

and for the governors, his abundant bounty.

All this, with a lofty mind, with

    a great heart containing no arrogance;

with traits whose purity was never tainted

    in any event by deceit or treachery;

    حَقَّقهُ فِي عَاهِلٍ خُبْرُ

    with rare fidelity, which seldom

    has experience confirmed in a sovereign;

with generosity whose grace was never marred,

    nor its gentleness, by reminders of favors or public display;

with sincerity in the heart's folds, holding

a secret like that within the flowers of the hills.

The soul inhales it, fragrant, and it does not

    fade when the perfume fades.

In God's mercy is the king who

departed before his life was complete.

His memory remains, a solace to those

he left behind, as long as the full moon rises.
