At your service, O companions of the club,

gentlemen who are peers in virtue.

You honored my standing with your invitation

and your presence to hear my recitation.

And by your kindness in concealing my shortcomings,

you brought me the greatest joy.

    Those qualities of courtesy

among you, of warm companionship and aid,

have been granted to none but you,

among gracious townsmen or desert dwellers.

They deepened a love in me I had not thought—though it had

reached its utmost limit—capable of increase.

It is Zahle, the beloved town; and is there

a retreat more delightful for a visitor?

    Whoever seeks repose and well-being,

there the thirsty one's thirst is quenched.

Is there, in the lands that have been described,

anything like its air for healing bodies,

or its sweet, cool water when

summer's heat is kindled to its fiercest blaze,

or its sun, whose rays flow

with balm that heals the livers,

or its intoxication, through which pious reward is lost?

    Zahle's ascetics are no ascetics!

Or its river, with watering places

for the senses and the spirit, for those who come to drink,

amid the changing colors of its cascades,

in keeping with evenings and early mornings,

and its hissing in the ear as it descends,

until it falls with a thunderous voice,

and the rapture of souls that sense in it

what the bodies of onlookers cannot sense?

What woodland could rival its woodland's beauty,

had no aggressor afflicted it with harm?

I weep for the vanished great trees,

    those giants with towering crowns.

No axe felled each towering tree

among them, but an executioner's blade.

By God, I shall never cease remembering

how they stood in ranks like soldiers,

    and thrust their heads upward

from their low-lying place in the valley,

and the changes in their state, in which

    beauties were arrayed as opposites.

Scarcely are their leaves seen at dusk

    as sorrow fluttering above boughs,

before they return to their accustomed ways

at dawn, their thirstiest leaf wet with dew.

Destruction ravaged them; had they accepted

the costliest ransom, a ransomer would not have been lacking.

    Yet your resolve renewed them

before it was too late, with the noblest renewal.

So I found consolation, and was cheered

by hope of an age whose dawn is breaking.

We exchange the caprices of its predecessor

for the bliss of a rightly guided, guiding era.

Let memory, then, silence its lament,

and let the singing bird's voice rise.

And let the trumpets sound in rhythm,

joyfully to the ringing of lutes.

And let us proceed amid the joys of our revival,

and spend our days like feast days.

I do remember Zahle when I was

a playful boy among other boys,

learning my letters there, filled with

impetuousness, so I heeded no guidance.

    Each diligently prepared his lesson,

while I had neither lessons nor preparation.

I passed evening and morning, while the monitor thought

    that ignorance filled my robes.

And it seemed, with dangers surrounding me,

that doom would surely catch me.

But I escaped by a miracle,

    while the colt foamed furiously.

And my keen memory would come to me

with reinforcements at my year's end.

O companions of my early youth, wondrous

is this outcome of that beginning!

Had this wisdom, which came afterward,

been promised by our former ignorance?

Who then could have imagined for us

this evening journey, when we were all setting out at dawn?

Yesterday's little ones have now grown up,

and are called fathers and grandfathers.

Their jet-black hair has whitened, and they walk

    with bent figures and necks.

Such is life; nothing remains in

one state—ask the ruins of ʿAd.

Yet when we perish, O homeland

for which we give our lives, live on, secure forever!

And Zahle's standing shall forever attain

the pinnacle of glory, despite the envious.

    Zahle's lions find no rival

in the lions of any land in the world.

Zahle's generous souls are not outnumbered

by the generous of any land in the world.

Its men of letters hold their place

at the forefront of those who speak the tongue of ḍād.

    Its craftsmen excel, though

they have never once obtained support.

In every science, every brilliant mind,

and for every art, every consummate master.

They are people of honor and proud dignity,

not people of abasement and indolence.

At every far-reaching goal of ambition,

their homeland has grown mighty through individuals among them.

At the farthest reaches of the inhabited world, how many are their

    marks of initiative and creation!

How great they would be if they united

and cast aside resentments and hatreds!

Shall I behold reform among them

one day taking the place of corruption?

That is what the rulers hope for, and what

the enemies fear as they lie in wait.

    Salute beautiful al-Muallaqa, a

    home welcoming visitors.

A home made mighty by every dignified man

of exalted standing, and every generous soul.

Amid life's reversals, they are the mightiest pillars

of their homeland, and its strongest supporting arms.

    They inherit praise, most deservedly,

for their endeavors have merited acclaim.

O council of the two towns, arrayed

like a necklace of noble, illustrious men,

that kindness of yours bestowed on me

an honor through which I hoped for immortality.

For you have favored me and surpassed every limit

with a beautiful deed beyond the ordinary.

To God belong the wonders of hearts, when

they are also signs of immortality.

O you who graciously honor a brother

who has long yearned toward you,

this generosity has always been your custom,

and a people, like a person, has its habits.
