And O year we have welcomed

With our breasts full of joy,

    Remove the sign of misery,

And bring the sign of glad tidings.

Take away what has afflicted us

And made the red tears flow,

So that, after their murkiness, they may clear—

The tears of the grateful eye,

Like the soul's serenity after calamity,

Its sorrow having left remembrance behind.

Make the paths a watercourse once more,

    Pouring forth bounty and benevolence.

We yearn with a mother's yearning

    When she has suckled rain,

    And every towering tree remains

A palace in the shelter of its shade.

With this hope, it was sweet

For us to bid farewell to what had passed.

And we greeted what was to come

With what takes the free man captive.

We held a festival by night,

Whose memory is allied with eternity,

    To meet our year, generous,

    Cheerful of face and smiling.

We made a night shine with beauty,

With the light of grand adornment.

We drank of its purity in purity,

And added blossoms to its blossoms.

And made the branches dance for it,

    And recited poetry for it,

    Perhaps a joy from it

Will make amends for what brought harm.

If ever the former year did ill,

    May the latter do good.
