Am I each day to bid farewell to one departing,

and send a melting heart in his wake?

O my friend, you left a wish of mine unfulfilled,

which was my prayer: 'May I never lose you as a companion.'

Our familiar haunts lie deserted; once, with love, they were

filled, so I imagine them as ruins.

And I see the faces of those present, as though they

are searching for the radiant face now absent.

You were the beloved brother and the close companion who

never forgot an obligation or neglected a duty.

If in my life, now that you have left it, there is

any sweetness, life is not sweet after you.

Indeed, the one for whom you struggled, watchful

and steadfast, no longer has any desire for life.

    وَالمَوْتُ لاَ يَرْعَى لِحَيٍّ جَانِبَا

    Tawfiq—success, the name you bear—has eluded you;

and death has no regard for anyone living.

Where is the sweet speech that hopes are given to drink,

like honey, however their tastes may differ?

Where are the pleasant conversations, all of them

life stories filled with curiosities and wonders?

Where is he, beautiful in character and form,

pure in disposition, unsullied in his aims?

Noble in his qualities by nature, he took no

ranks or offices from anything but them.

He is wronged, yet you never see him resentful,

or provoked, yet you never see him angry.

And he smiles on—it is not his face,

but his heart; others smile falsely.

The character of a human being in the true sense, whom

ages have polished until he was perfect in virtue.

O Hasib, if you are robbed of your brother, I too

complain, as you do, of plundering Time.

You were indeed my teacher; can I find

a word to steady your throbbing heart?

It is consolation enough that he left the world, which has

been filled with sorrow, tragedies, and calamities.

So may he find with his God what could not

be attained here: hopes and desires.
