أَلاَAh! هَلْhave ...? تَرَكْتُمْyou left يَاO لَقَوْمِيmy people (in appeal) فَضِيلَةa virtue
تَبِيتُremains مِنَfrom الحُسَّادِthe envious يَوْماًfor a day بِمَعْزِلِapart
Ah, have you, O my people, left any virtue
To remain for a day apart from the envious?
أَلَيْسَis not ...? جَمِيلُnoble الْفِعْلِaction أَوْلَىmore deserving لَدَيْكُمُin your eyes
بِظَنٍّof a judgment جَمِيلٍfavorable مِثْلُهُlike it أَوْor بِأَمْثلِof a better one
Is not a noble deed more deserving, in your eyes,
Of an equally noble judgment, or one still better?
عَفَاmay forgive اللهُGod عَنْكُمْyou all ذَلِكُمْthat (to you all) جُهْدُthe utmost مَاwhat بِهِwith it
عِقَابُكُمُyour punishment مِنْfrom غَافِرٍone who forgives مُتَسَهِّلِlenient
May God forgive you—that is the utmost
Punishment a forgiving, lenient one can inflict on you.
وَفُدِّيتِand may you be ransomed يَاO أُخْتَsister of الْكِرَامِthe noble بِمَاby what انْطَوَتْfolded
عَلَيْهِaround it حَنَايَاthe hearts of عَاذِلاَتٍfemale censurers وَعُذَّلِand male censurers
And may you be ransomed, O sister of the noble, by what lies
Within the hearts of women and men who censure.
لَئِنْeven if سَاءَmaligned يَوْماًone day فِيconcerning الكَمَالِperfection تَقَوُّلٌslander
لَمَاsurely never نَالَdetracted يَوماًever مِنْهُfrom it سُوءُthe malice of التَّقَولِslander
Even if slander should one day malign perfection,
The malice of slander could never diminish it.
تَجَاوَزَhas surpassed حَدَّthe bounds of البِرِّkindness مَاwhat تَصْنَعِينَهُyou do it
وَزَادَكِand has increased your مَجْداًglory فَرطُthe abundance of هَذَاthis التَّطَوُّلِgenerosity
What you do has surpassed the bounds of kindness,
And this overflowing generosity has heightened your glory.
تَبَيَّنْتِyou recognized نَقْصَthe deficiency of الفَضْلِvirtue مَاso long as لَمْnot تُتِمِّهِyou complete it
بِمَسْعَىthrough effort وَبِالمَسْعَىand through effort تَمَامُthe completion of التَّفَضُّلgenerosity
You saw that virtue falls short unless you complete it
Through effort—and through effort generosity is made complete.
أَتَأْسِينَdo you heal? أَبْطَالاًheroes وَأَشْفَىand more healing مِنَthan الأَسَىtreatment
لَهُمْfor them بَارِقٌa gleam مِنْfrom وَجْهِكِyour face المُتَهَلِّلbeaming
Do you heal heroes? More healing than treatment
For them is a gleam from your beaming face.
وَتَبْتَدِرِينَand you hasten to الخَيْرَgoodness حَتَّىso much that كَأَنَّمَاas though

And you hasten to do good, as though
You were fulfilling an obligation due without delay.
دَعَاكِcalled you فُؤَادٌa heart طَاهِرٌpure فَأَجَبْتِهِso you answered it
لإِسْعَافِto aid جَرْحَىthe wounded of الحَرْبِwar لَمْdid not تَتَمَهَّلِيyou delay
A pure heart called you, so you answered it;
To aid the wounded of war, you did not delay.
وَكَمْand many an مَلَكٌangel فِيin حَوْمَةِthe arena of الشَّرَفِhonor ازْدَهَىhas gloried
بِتَمْرِيضin nursing صُعْلُوكٍa pauper شُجَاعbrave مُجَنْدَلِlaid low
And many an angel has gloried in honor's arena
In nursing a brave pauper laid low.
وَكَمْand many a هَالِكٌdying man دَامِيbleeding at الجَوَانِبِthe sides تَنْحَنِيbends

And many a dying man, his sides bleeding—
At his feet bends a woman whose head is crowned.
كَذَاthus أَنْتِyou إَلاَّexcept أَنَّthat بِرَّكِyour kindness لَمْnot يَكُنْwas
لِمَفْخَرَةٍfor boasting فِيamong النَّاسِpeople أَوْor لِتَنَبُّلِfor self-exaltation
Such are you—except that your kindness was not
For boasting among people or for self-exaltation.
فَبَينَاso while تَرَاكِsees you الْعَيْنُthe eye إِنْسِيَّةَhuman in الْحِلَىadornments
إِذَاsuddenly مَلَكٌan angel مِنْof رَحْمَةٍmercy فِيكwithin you يَنْجَليis revealed
So, while the eye sees you in human guise,
Behold, an angel of mercy shines forth in you.
