A new life arose in the land,

    Filling its reaches without delay.

Mustafa was indeed the first to awaken it,

    And Farid followed—an excellent successor.

And Ahmad followed that path, whose

    Hardships he endured without weariness,

To complete, on the paths to greatness, what he began,

And die as the last remaining of the saints.

That life, despite its recent inception,

    Strengthened the yearnings for independence.

And the complaint of one fettered in his chains rose,

Over a thousand promises followed by delay.

And after the songbirds, there were heard on the hills

Of Egypt and in the valley lions of the lairs.

Then behold the land, no longer as it was,

And behold—like the edge of a gleaming sword.

And behold, despair's veil was torn, and behind it

Hope, like the edge of a gleaming sword.

And behold, the weak and peaceable plunged forward,

Making light of the mightiest terrors.

But there stood against time, obstructing it,

One who thought Egypt's awakening a kind of impossibility.

He measured the present against the past, in his delusion

That stagnation was far from being uprooted.

An ancient folly that has never ceased in any nation

    To assail lions with cubs.

Who can hold his age back from change,

If it so wills, being the transformer of conditions?

No day is like the day that brought grief to

Egypt, caught unawares by Ghali's fatal fall.

It was as though a fire-striker sparked that morning,

    Its roar linking the south to the north;

Its fire was hurled upon the great man

By the hand of a bold man, lavish with his life,

From a band that volunteered for self-sacrifice

And ransomed its creed with valor.

It thought the community's defenders had been deceived

By the oaths of oath-breakers dwelling there.

So it aimed to awaken them, but struck

With a calamity fiercer than an earthquake.

It looked toward the homeland's champion and struck down

The man of unassailable might, in haste.

Then he was brought down amid his proud glory

And the dawn of his power, by the searing meteor.

His assailant was not unaware that he

Would be slain, yet swooped down without a care.

Had he thought him able to achieve his aim through judgment,

He would not have wished him torn limb from limb,

Preserving for his country and his people

The resolves of that eloquent man of action.

Did you see how Ahmad sprang up as a defender,

In a stand that took the place of every struggle?

And wrought wonders in his marvelous defense,

That neither later nor earlier men had achieved.

Had the slain man been within earshot of the orator,

He would surely have pardoned, with glory's esteem for him high,

And would have refused to let discord rise in his wake

As a market for selling old rags.

A sudden calamity may strike its blow

By the hand of the destroyer or the assassin.

So a people spends the night, with worries upon their heads,

    Weighing heavily, like crushing burdens.

No sound is more repugnant, when a nation reviews

Its history, than the auctioneer's cry.

But it is discord whose traces have vanished

Through the prudence of the righteous among the descendants.
