جَمَعَunited الكِفَاءُa match of equals إِمَارَةَprincely rank الأَنْسَابِlineages
جَمَعَ الكِفَاءُ إِمَارَةَ الأَنْسَابِ
فِيin خُطْبَةِa betrothal وإِمَارَةَand princely rank الأَحْسَابِancestral merits
فِي خُطْبَةِ وإِمَارَةَ الأَحْسَابِ
A match of equals has united nobility of lineage
In betrothal, with nobility of ancestral merit.
أَرَأَيْتَhave you seen كَيْفَhow تَوَاشُجُintertwining الأَعْرَاقِancestral roots فِيin
أَرَأَيْتَ كَيْفَ تَوَاشُجُ الأَعْرَاقِ فِي
رَوْضِthe garden العُلَىglory وَتَوَاثُقُand firm bonding الأَسْبَابِbonds
رَوْضِ العُلَى وَتَوَاثُقُ الأَسْبَابِ
Have you seen how ancestral roots intertwine in
The garden of glory, and bonds grow firm?
هَذَاthis مَقَامُoccasion التَّهنئَآتِcongratulations فَقِفْso stand لَدَىbefore
هَذَا مَقَامُ التَّهنئَآتِ فَقِفْ لَدَى
أَسْمَىthe most exalted أَميرٍprince فِيin أَجَلِّthe most august جَنَابِcourt
أَسْمَى أَميرٍ فِي أَجَلِّ جَنَابِ
This is the occasion for congratulations; stand before
The most exalted prince in the most august court.
وَابرُزْand step forward إِليْهِtoward him مِنَfrom الزِّحَامِthe crowd وَحَيِّهِand greet him
وَابرُزْ إِليْهِ مِنَ الزِّحَامِ وَحَيِّهِ
بِتَحِيَّةwith a greeting الإِكْبَارِreverence وَالإِعْجَابِand admiration
بِتَحِيَّة الإِكْبَارِ وَالإِعْجَابِ
Step forward toward him from the crowd and greet him
With a greeting of reverence and admiration.
عُمَرٌOmar وَيَدْرِيand knows الشَّرْقُthe East مَنْwho عُمَرOmar وَمَاand what
عُمَرٌ وَيَدْرِي الشَّرْقُ مَنْ عُمَر وَمَا
هُوَhe فِيamong أَعِزَّتِهِits mighty men وَفِيand among الأَقْطَابِleading figures
هُوَ فِي أَعِزَّتِهِ وَفِي الأَقْطَابِ
Omar—the East knows who Omar is, and what
He is among its mighty men and leading figures.
تَاهَتْgloried عَلَىover الأَمْصَارِcities مِصْرُEgypt بِجَاهِهِthrough his prestige
تَاهَتْ عَلَى الأَمْصَارِ مِصْرُ بِجَاهِهِ
وَالحُقْبُand the age تَاهَgloried بِهِthrough him عَلَىover الأَحْقَابِthe ages
وَالحُقْبُ تَاهَ بِهِ عَلَى الأَحْقَابِ
Egypt has gloried over other cities through his prestige;
And the age has gloried through him over other ages.
قَيْلٌa prince لَهُhis is التَّبرِيزُpreeminence فِيamong أَهْلِpeople of النَّدَىgenerosity
قَيْلٌ لَهُ التَّبرِيزُ فِي أَهْلِ النَّدَى
وَلَهُand his is التَّقدُّمُprecedence فِيamong أُوليthose possessing الأَلْبَابِunderstanding
وَلَهُ التَّقدُّمُ فِي أُولي الأَلْبَابِ
A prince, preeminent among the generous,
And foremost among men of understanding.
وَلَهُand his are مَواهِبُهُhis gifts العِدَادُthe many فَجَلَّso exalted is مَنْthe One who
وَلَهُ مَواهِبُهُ العِدَادُ فَجَلَّ مَنْ
أَعْطَاهُgave him مَاwhat أعْطَىHe gave بِغَيْرِwithout حِسَابِreckoning
أَعْطَاهُ مَا أعْطَى بِغَيْرِ حِسَابِ
His gifts are many; exalted is He who
Gave him what He gave without reckoning.
زِيدَتْwas increased بِهِthrough him شَرَفاًin honor مَكَانَةُthe standing آلِهِhis family
زِيدَتْ بِهِ شَرَفاً مَكَانَةُ آلِهِ
وَمَكَانَةُand the standing العُلَمَاءِscholars وَالكُتَّابِand writers
وَمَكَانَةُ العُلَمَاءِ وَالكُتَّابِ
Through him his family's standing gained in honor,
As did the standing of scholars and writers.
فِيin نَجْلِهِhis son لاَحَتْappeared مَخَايِلُsigns نُبْلِهِhis nobility
فِي نَجْلِهِ لاَحَتْ مَخَايِلُ نُبْلِهِ
مَوْسُومَةًmarked بِوِسَامِهِwith his beauty الخَلاَّبِcaptivating
مَوْسُومَةً بِوِسَامِهِ الخَلاَّبِ
In his son appeared the signs of his nobility,
Marked with his captivating beauty.
أخَذَhe took الفَضَائِلَvirtues عَنْfrom أَبِيهِhis father فَجِئْنَso they came فِيin
أخَذَ الفَضَائِلَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ فَجِئْنَ فِي
صُوَرٍforms مُجدَّدَةِrenewed وَحُسْنٍand beauty رَابِيgrowing
صُوَرٍ مُجدَّدَةِ وَحُسْنٍ رَابِي
He took his virtues from his father, and they came in
Renewed forms and ever-growing beauty.
يَاO ابنَson الَّذيhim who تَنْمِيnurtures عُلاَهُhis glory أُسْرَةٌa family
يَا ابنَ الَّذي تَنْمِي عُلاَهُ أُسْرَةٌ
هِيَit مَحْتِدُthe wellspring الأَمْجَادِglories وَالصُّيابِand noble men
هِيَ مَحْتِدُ الأَمْجَادِ وَالصُّيابِ
O son of him whose glory is nurtured by a family
That is the wellspring of glories and noble men:
أقْرَرْتَyou gladdened عَينَthe eye العَصْرِthe age حِينَwhen أَرَيْتَهُyou showed it
أقْرَرْتَ عَينَ العَصْرِ حِينَ أَرَيْتَهُ
حِلمَsound judgment الكُهُولِmature men وَأَنْتَthough you are غَضُّtender إِهَابِskin
حِلمَ الكُهُولِ وَأَنْتَ غَضُّ إِهَابِ
You gladdened the eye of the age when you showed it
The sound judgment of mature men, though still tender-skinned with youth.
للهِto God (in admiration) فيamong الخَفِرَاتِmodest maidens مَنْshe whom آثَرْتَهَاyou preferred her
للهِ في الخَفِرَاتِ مَنْ آثَرْتَهَا
فَظَفِرْتَso you attained بالأَسْنَىwith the loftiest مِنَof الآرَابِdesires
فَظَفِرْتَ بالأَسْنَى مِنَ الآرَابِ
How splendid among modest maidens is she whom you chose!
Thus you attained the loftiest of desires.
وَجَلاَand revealed الهَوَىlove وَالرَّأْيُand judgment فيin إِيثَارِهَاchoosing her
وَجَلاَ الهَوَى وَالرَّأْيُ في إِيثَارِهَا
عَنْabout صَبْوَةٍyouthful passion لَمْdid not تَعْدُoverstep حَدَّthe bounds صَوَابِrightness
عَنْ صَبْوَةٍ لَمْ تَعْدُ حَدَّ صَوَابِ
And love and judgment, in choosing her, disclosed
A youthful passion that never overstepped the bounds of right.
بَرَزَتْshe emerged وَلَمْand did not يَكُbe نَائِياًdistant عَنfrom بَابِهَاher door
بَرَزَتْ وَلَمْ يَكُ نَائِياً عَن بَابِهَا
فيon مَدْرَجِthe ascent العَلْيَاءِglory أَرْفَعُthe loftiest بَابِdoorway
في مَدْرَجِ العَلْيَاءِ أَرْفَعُ بَابِ
She came forth, and not far from her door stood
The loftiest doorway on the ascent to glory.
وَمِنَand through العَنَايَةِprovidential care فَارَقَتْshe left خَدْراًa secluded chamber إلىto
وَمِنَ العَنَايَةِ فَارَقَتْ خَدْراً إلى
خِدْرِa secluded chamber الرِّعَايَةِcare فيin أَعَزِّthe most honored رِحَابِprecincts
خِدْرِ الرِّعَايَةِ في أَعَزِّ رِحَابِ
And through providence she left one secluded chamber for
A chamber of care in the most honored precincts.
سِبْطٌa grandchild لِشِيْرِينَof Shirin الكَبِيرthe Great وَلَمْand has not يَزَلْceased
سِبْطٌ لِشِيْرِينَ الكَبِير وَلَمْ يَزَلْ
مُتَمَثِّلاًembodied بِحِلاَهُwith his virtues فيin الأَعْقَابِdescendants
مُتَمَثِّلاً بِحِلاَهُ في الأَعْقَابِ
A grandchild of Shirin the Great, who has never ceased
To be embodied, with his virtues, in his descendants.
رَبُّواthey reared كَماas رَبَّىhe reared وصَانُواand they protected وُلْدَهُمْtheir children
رَبُّوا كَما رَبَّى وصَانُوا وُلْدَهُمْ
أدَباًthrough good breeding كَمَاas هُوhe himself صَانَهُمْhe protected them مِنْfrom عَابِreproach
أدَباً كَمَا هُو صَانَهُمْ مِنْ عَابِ
They reared as he reared, and guarded their children
Through good breeding, as he himself had guarded them from reproach.
فِيin الإِخْوَةِthe brothers الغُرِّillustrious الثَّلاَثَةِthe three هَلْdo تَرَىyou see
فِي الإِخْوَةِ الغُرِّ الثَّلاَثَةِ هَلْ تَرَى
إِلاَّexcept جَمَالَthe beauty خَلاَئِقٍcharacters أَتْرَابِpeers
إِلاَّ جَمَالَ خَلاَئِقٍ أَتْرَابِ
In the three illustrious brothers, do you see
Anything but the beauty of these peers' characters?
سِرُّthe secret السَّعادَةِhappiness فيin تَعَدُّدِmultiplication مُنْجِبٍa sire of noble offspring
سِرُّ السَّعادَةِ في تَعَدُّدِ مُنْجِبٍ
بِصِفَاتِهِthrough his qualities فيin وُلْدِهِhis children الأَنْجَابِnoble
بِصِفَاتِهِ في وُلْدِهِ الأَنْجَابِ
The secret of happiness lies in a good father's multiplying himself
Through his qualities in his noble children.
فَلْتَهْنِيءِso may it gladden البَيْتَيْنِthe two houses آَصِرَةٌa bond زَكَتْflourished
فَلْتَهْنِيءِ البَيْتَيْنِ آَصِرَةٌ زَكَتْ
بِطَرَائِفِwith the choicest الأَخْلاَقِvirtues وَالآدَابِand refinements
بِطَرَائِفِ الأَخْلاَقِ وَالآدَابِ
So may both houses rejoice in a bond that has flourished
With the choicest virtues and refinements.
عُقِدَتْwas tied بِهَاthrough it صِلَةُa bond المَفَاخِرِhonors وَالعُلَىand glory
عُقِدَتْ بِهَا صِلَةُ المَفَاخِرِ وَالعُلَى
للأُسْرَتَيْنِfor the two families وَخُلِّدَتْand was immortalized بِكِتَابِin a written record
للأُسْرَتَيْنِ وَخُلِّدَتْ بِكِتَابِ
Through it a bond of honor and glory was tied
For both families, and immortalized in writing.
