A caller summoned him to battle, and he resolved

To set forth, and freely offered himself as a volunteer.

His zeal overcame his love for his wife,

So he went away, bidding his heart farewell as he said goodbye.

And Amina spent her days after his departure

In sorrow, not secure against bereavement.

She planted a narcissus flower in the house's courtyard,

To be her solace until he returned.

She lavished care upon it, just as

A mother's eyes watch over a child at the breast,

Until, when there came to her about her husband

News that deafened both her ears and filled her with dread,

Her gallbladder burst in grief for him, and she nearly

Shattered from the horror of that calamity.

And it was as though that loss, before it came,

Had not been expected, so deeply did it grieve her.

Then one morning she looked in on her companion, which

Had consoled her in sorrow and anguish.

Then, behold, its freshness had withered, and it was like

An eye from which sorrow had made tears flow.
