    فَلا تعجَبوا للشيبِ فيهِ روائِعُ

    Yes, a terror from Mayya's phantom struck him;

So do not marvel at his gray hair—he has known terrors.

A phantom came to him in darkness, and he took it

For her real self visiting him as dawn was breaking.

And oh, how often he took her real self for her phantom,

So in either case his hopes came to nothing.

    تُغالِطُهُ ابصارُهُ والمَسامِعُ

    The lover is forever disappointed in his hopes;

His eyes and ears deceive him.

And oh, how often I stole a glance at Mayya,

Then she spoke with her eyes, while my heart listened:

Gently! Love has no arrow to be guarded against.

Yes, it does—but we defend ourselves with our hearts.

The arrows of death, of love, and of the glance are all

Alike; our vitals are where they strike.

Take vengeance on a heart that overstepped its bounds

In loving you; I submit to whatever you wish.

And leave no remnant of it—may it be your ransom—

Lest it become a heart that returns to passion.

But leave in me a remnant of thought,

For with it I am content to forgo all that.

With it I fashion a ring from praise of Jawda,

Which, by my life, fingers can scarcely behold.

And by praising him I earn my neck a collar of glory,

For with that praise I sing among the people.

And Jawda among us is nothing but a bounty to us,

Which generosity and good deeds have lavished upon us.

He held in his hands the sword and the pen that

Resembled his sword, though each has its proper place.

He harms enemies with the sword, benefiting his companions,

And does good with pens; thus all is beneficial.

He mastered the secrets of the sciences, yet did not encompass

His own resplendent qualities, which are marvels.

Qualities like spring's blossoms in their beauty

And abundance, with fragrance wafting from them.

So do not reproach me for falling short, and count them for me,

So I may gather them into verse, as I am doing.
