  1. قَرَعَ الزَمانُ عليك سنَّ النادِمِ

    من حيثُ مَدَّ اليك كفَّ الظالمِ

    Time knocked on you with the years of the regretful one

    From where the hand of the oppressor extended to you

  2. حتىّ بكاك مع البواكي جاعِلاً

    عَبَراتِهِ دمعَ السَحاب الساجمِ

    Until he wept with the wailers making

    His tears the rain of the pouring clouds

  3. يا غُرَّةً بجبينهِ بل دُرَّةً

    في عنقهِ لا من جواهر ناظمِ

    O the dearest on his forehead, nay the precious pearl

    Around his neck, not of arranged jewelry

  4. إن كانَ يبكيك الزَمانُ فَلا تسل

    عن حالنا في خَطبك المتفاقمِ

    If time is crying you, do not ask

    About our state in your accumulated misfortunes

  5. فَرضٌ عليَّ لك الرثآءُ اخطُّهُ

    بدمٍ على لوح الفؤاد الهائِمِ

    It is obligatory upon me to eulogize you, I inscribe it

    With blood on the tablet of the anxious heart

  6. ذا أَدمُعٍ مسكوبَةٍ وَحُشاسةٍ

    مَسلوبَةٍ وحشا كَئيبٍ واجمِ

    With spilled tears and snatched ardency

    Sad and grieving absence and silence

  7. أَيُّ المحامد لم تكن لك خَلَّةً

    فَكأَنَّ طينك كان محضَ مكارمِ

    Which virtues were not qualities of yours

    As if your clay was pure virtues

  8. مُتواضع النفس الرَفيعة في العُلى

    متصاغِرٌ في رتبة المتعاظمِ

    Humble of high esteemed self

    Belittled in the station of the grand

  9. كالنجم يَسفُل في الغَدير مِثالُهُ

    حَتىّ لَتَطمَعُ فيهِ كفُّ الرائِمِ

    Like a star descending in the pond its example

    So that the hand of the shooter may covet it

  10. عَطِرُ الصفات لطيف ذاتٍ مثلما

    فاح الأَزاهرُ في خِلال نَسائِمِ

    The scent of traits, gentle being, as

    The flowers diffused amid the breezes

  11. شَهمٌ كَريم يدٍ كريم شمائِلٍ

    راقي ذرى العَليا سَليل أَكارمِ

    Courageous, generous handed, traits

    Elevated to the highest ancestry of nobles

  12. صافي السريرة ذو فؤادٍ مُخلِصٍ

    عَفُّ الإِزار حصيف رأي حازمِ

    Pure of conscience, loyal hearted

    Chaste, wise opinion, careful

  13. وَلَهُ الوجاهةُ وَالنَباهةُ وَالعُلى

    وَالمَجد والجود البَديع الحاتمي

    To him belong distinction, vigilance, sublimity

    Glory, generosity, wonderful conclusiveness

  14. مُغرىً بمنفعة الخلائق مُغرَمٌ

    بِقَضاء حاجاتٍ وَحَمل مَغارِمِ

    Tempted by benefiting people, passionate

    About fulfilling needs and bearing difficulties

  15. متفرّدٌ خَلقاً وَخُلقاً ما بِهِ

    من وَصمةٍ لمفندٍ أَو لائِمِ

    Unique in manners and etiquette, flawless

    By any dispraiser or blamer

  16. قصف الزَمانُ لَهُ شَباباً ناضِراً

    لَدنَ المَعاطِف رَطبَ قدٍّ ناعمِ

    Time peeled for him fresh blooming youth

    Of soft quality before the insisting garments

  17. كالسيف في الأَكفان أُدرج مُغمَداً

    وَالبَدرِ ملتحفاً بظلّ غمائِمِ

    As the sword sheathed in scabbards

    And the moon shrouded in the shadows of clouds

  18. جبلٌ بمصرَ هَوى فَلَم تأمن بها ال

    أَهرامُ بعد سقوطِه من هادمِ

    A mountain in Egypt which fell so the

    Pyramids did not feel safe after its demolisher

  19. عَظُمت رزيئتهُ وجلَّ مُصابهُ

    ما بين عُربٍ في الملا وأَعاجِمٍ

    His tragedy magnified and his affliction revered

    Among Arabs in wealth and non-Arabs

  20. خَطبٌ عَظيمٌ لَم يُقَس بعظائِمٍ

    بين الخطوب وَلَم يُظَق بعزائِمِ

    Great misfortune unmatched by misfortunes

    Between calamities and unparalleled resolves

  21. عَقَدت بِهِ الايامُ في استحكامها

    عَقداً شَديداً ما لَهُ من فاصمِ

    The days knotted in their strength with it

    A tight knot unfastened by any splitter

  22. وَدَجا بِهِ لَيلُ الكروب وَهَكَذا

    بِتنا نَراهُ نظيرَ حُلم النائِمِ

    The night of anguish darkened with it and thus

    We see him like the dream of the sleeper

  23. وَلى الى دار البقآءِ مُزايلاً

    دار الشقا فحظي بمجدٍ دائِمِ

    He moved to the house of eternity, departing

    The house of misery, so he won lasting glory

  24. سُرَّت بجبرائيلَ أَجنادُ العُلى

    فَتَباشَرَت وَزَهَت بِثَغرٍ باسمِ

    The heavenly hosts cheered for Gabriel

    They congratulated and smiled with joyful faces

  25. لِلقآئِهِ في الاوج صَفقةُ جاذِلٍ

    وَلِفَقدِهِ في الارض صَفقةُ لاطمِ

    For meeting him at the horizon, a hitting

    Of auspicious omen, and for losing him on earth, a hitting of misfortune

  26. صبراً احبَّتَهُ ولكن هل لكم

    للصَبر فيهِ من فؤادٍ سالمِ

    Patience, O his loved ones! But do you have

    A heart safe with patience for him

  27. فاذهب رعاك اللَه من متجدد ال

    ذِكرى على طول المدى المتقادمِ

    So go -may God shepherd you- from the renewed

    Remembrance over long durations of time

  28. وَعَلى ثراك من السَموات العُلى

    اذ أَرَّخوك انهلَّ غيثُ مراحمِ

    And over your grave from the highest heavens

    Permission was granted for the rain of mercies to pour
