The moringa boughs weep for your form,

And birds lament in sorrow upon the branches.

You snapped, O Separation, a branch of mine that in my heart I had

Planted, and my crimson tears had watered.

    خطفتَ معها فؤادي المدنَف العاني

    You snatched a jewel from me in haste;

With her you snatched my ailing, captive heart.

Precious—Time does not know her worth,

Nor can it ever put a price upon her.

You left me after her, with nothing sweeter to me

Than weeping—if only it healed my heart and anguish.

    فكانَ خصمي بِها دَمعي واحزاني

    Grief increases my tears, and tears my sorrow;

Thus, because of her, my tears and sorrows became my foes.

So, O cloud that wept over the gardens' flowers,

Help my tears with your own pouring tears.

If you weep over the fresh flowers, I too have

A flower that withered when it became parched.

And O rivers of the wilderness, pouring into the sea,

Would you not become tears between my eyelids,

So I may lament and weep for her, for whom I drained

My tears, yet they could not quench my fires?

Perhaps, if the flow of tears increases, it will quench what is

In my heart, for grief's blaze has exhausted me.

The mourned woman says, as her hour of death arrives:

“Wait—let me bid farewell to my loved ones and friends.

For in the lands of al-Sham I have a mother,

Who weeps over my absence with wailing and plaintive cries.

And I have a newborn; my childbed days after his birth are not yet over.

O Death, what sin have children and little ones committed?

A bride of two years, the henna on my hand has not faded,

Nor have I enjoyed my fill of my loved ones and companions.

I am like a garden flower; take in my stead,

O Death, whatever you wish of a garden's flowers.

I am a little bough of the dune; the garden has no need

Of me, with all the tender branches it contains.

I am like a pearl of April; take whatever

You desire, O Death, of pearls and coral.

I am a stranger in Egypt, save for a husband

And a little son; those two are my family and brethren.

If you would wean him from me, then, oh, the sorrow

For him, weaned though he has not yet been nourished with milk!

As though, in the language of his plight, he cries out in

His weeping: ‘Orphanhood, O Mother, has made me weep!’

So pity them both and pity me.” He said: “No, in haste

I seek departure, at a time imminent and near.”

“Mother, lament me when the doves wail at midmorning,

And seek the aid of every bird upon the branches.

And weep for her who, in her tender youth, was snapped off

    Unjustly, her years but twenty-two.

And weep for her who had scarcely grasped life and awakened

When Death came, and she yielded in submission.

Indeed, I have left my beloved son with you,

Like a flower remaining from a sprig of basil.

May he console you in my parting; he is the

Remembrance from me for you after you have lost me.”
