The adversary has no path to you.

How can he prevail when good fortune is his opponent?

You are mighty; whoever opposes you becomes

    abased, contemptible, and broken.

Through you, the deprived is denied in this world for what

his hands have earned, while the favored receives provision.

Time has grown fair, having shed the blood of those

who opposed you: it both delights and spills blood.

It came to you like a messenger on an errand,

which it fulfilled for you just as you desired.

So rejoice, for Time is your slave, obedient

and dutiful, though some servants are disloyal.

Like a band who rose against you, believing

that Time had grown heedless and would not awaken.

    فاليوم كلّ في شقاهُ غَريقُ

    Before then, you drowned them in the sea of your bounty;

today each is drowned in his own misery.

If you honor the ignoble man, then indeed

baseness has its claims and rights there.

Likewise, when the noble man is insulted,

he is worthy of magnanimity and forbearance.

a gift befitting your gracious generosity.

for favors that have encircled your necks!

    فَقلوبكم ابداً لهنَّ خفوقُ

    Your efforts have gone astray, and your striving has failed;

so your hearts are forever aflutter.

    ومَن الَّذي حربَ القضاء يُطيقُ

    Fate is the ally of the one you have opposed;

and who can bear a war against Fate?

Had you wished, you would have commanded it from the outset

against them; but the noble man is compassionate.

A people sought a goal and gathered around it

in ignorance, though their enterprise was division.

So they scattered, suffering themselves what

they had intended: thus scheming does not prevail.

They swaggered with threats, but fell short

at the encounter—their hands and shins alike.

And you stood firm, alone amid calamities, as though

you had a companion among the ranks of misfortunes.

    ان المُقيّد نفسُه لَطَليقُ

    You bound yourself with steadfastness out of courage;

indeed, the bound man himself is truly free.

So there you tested the sincerity of those you befriended:

far from it—not every friend is true.

And you recognized the foe who had donned loyalty

when his veil was rent apart.

So rejoice in what leaves them needing consolation, and never

cease to race ahead toward success.

The world beams before you, as though it were

the expanse of your own face, open and smiling.

And the Nile's face gleams before you,

    smiling, while its palm claps.

Along its two banks, the verdure is peridot

from its fertility; its riverbed is agate.

If its turbidity were not beneficial—

and benefit is what you seek—it would run clear.

Through it, Egypt in your shade drank cups

that delighted her, as though they were pure wine.

They flow among those who come to drink, as though

the water of life were poured forth before them.

    فَلهم صَبوحٌ لا يَليهِ غَبوقُ

    And they always reveal the lights of your justice;

so theirs is a morning draught with no evening draught to follow.

A justice reached, after their striving,

    by Kisra Anushirwan and al-Faruq.

And yours are lovely qualities, inferior to which are

the peridot and agate in necklaces.

Traits of gentleness, like a breeze mingled with

musk, released by the breaths of morning.

    وَلأَنتَ عن حُكم الشَبيه تَفوقُ

    A character innate in you, not assumed in imitation;

indeed, you rise above any judgment by comparison.

And the brilliance of a penetrating, blazing mind,

from which lightning flashes dispel calamity's darkness.

And with you, intuition and intellect almost permit

assent to be grasped before conception.

glory, which you deserve among men.

A branch of the exalted Muhammad; likewise the branches

    flourish when their roots flourish.

A glory he built of old; it is indeed

an ancient house to which good fortunes make pilgrimage.

You founded it upon eminence and praise in

ancient times; thus it is deeply rooted in glory.

Bound to good fortune is your company, whose

    enemy's company is forever scattered.

So live safely; may your haters be your ransom against their will,

and many a friend has willingly been your ransom.
