O slope of Lebanon, indeed my heart

Is your neighbor, and a neighbor does no wrong.

It flew with the longing of a sorrowful lover,

Like bees toward blossoms and fragrances.

    So guard it from eyes,

For those eyes are hunters of hearts.

    They have arrows from eyelids,

They slay hearts that melt because of them.

As though they were the arrows of Death,

So they never miss when they strike.

But they are enamored of a lovesick man,

So they circle round his doom.

    ان انتَ سالمتَها تَثور

    For them, peace is a house of war;

If you make peace with them, they rise in revolt.

And who, I wonder, can do anything but

Live in accord with them and make peace?

Or whom do you see foolishly seeking

To quarrel with them and resist them?

And who, having thought that easy,

Stands firm in the face of the clash?

    There is anguish—and what anguish!

This world of yours heaves because of it.

A hardship beside which you see every hardship

As one of the easiest things for you.
