O carefree one, may life bring you joy.

You lived, while lovers died of sorrow.

O sorrowful-hearted one, come, let us lament to one another.

Those with famished livers are nourished by lament.

O lovers, come, let us bring ourselves to tears.

For thirst, our tears are sweet, fresh water.

    Tell me tales of passion.

O narrators of love, O excellent narrators!

Tell me of the torments of lovesickness.

What are those terrifying, deadly assaults like?

What has love wrought within your livers?

What are those languid yet cutting glances like?

What of the deeds of spears that pierced you

with the glance for spearpoint and the figure for shaft?

What of the swords of eyebrows, which

    are unsheathed above the spearheads?

Tell me of passion; I shall tell you.

We are all trustworthy in recounting love's tales.

I am sick with love—are you, then,

likewise, or do you have healers for it?

O carefree one, beware of passion.

In it, resolve's upward steps are downward steps.

The cause of love is eyes and eyes:

glances that are met by glances.

And few are those who attain what is desired.

Nay, attaining the objects of desire is forbidden.

Never have I desired what I wished for without

the paths to its attainment narrowing around me.
