May the downpour of recurring rains water you,

with tears that flowed from the eyes of morning rainclouds.

And may there rest upon your tomb each day

the favor of God Most High, forevermore.

Your day is greatly remembered among humankind,

as you are remembered by townsman and nomad.

And recalling you yields nothing but tears,

with which longing flares within the heart.

And an eye's downpour cannot do one like you justice,

even if the tears ran black.

And none complains of harm from such a man,

for one who made loved ones and enemies weep.

And one whose watchword was piety,

and one who never complained of harm among people.

And one whose traits were moral lessons,

and wakefulness at night was among the most comforting pillows.

I knew you never to disappoint a caller's plea,

through them, the rightly guided take their example.

And in your zeal you were a fire—so what ails me?

So why do you not answer a caller's plea?

It blazed within you for a time, until

I see you today, turned to ashes.

And whenever you called to us with admonition,

it came to blaze within us because we lost you.

And through you, lifeless things would melt in sorrow,

you would portray for the assembly the Day of Calling.

And you were a pillar of virtue among humankind,

and today you have become part of lifeless matter.

And you were the noblest of those who cherished affection,

so virtue was left with its pillar fallen.

The followers of Jesus will weep after Jirjis.

So why do you not yearn for affection?

He passed away, by God, journeying to Him,

and attained in His presence his utmost desire.

By your life, that is our destination; toward it

we steer our riding camels, while life is the camel-driver.

    أَلَم تَكُ في القَديمِ لِقَومِ عادِ

    And these dwellings are no dwellings of ours;

did they not once belong to the people of ʿAd?

We have amused ourselves with life, yet it is a dream

appearing to our eyes in the darkness of night.

We delight in it and believe it certain,

and forget that it is in sleep.

If you desire steadfastness in the face of death,

then supply yourself with the noblest provisions.

For the prospect of death is feared only

when the prospect of resurrection is feared.
