    ارى منهما جيشاً تلاهُ رديفُهُ

    Love, old and new, dwells in my heart;

in the two I see an army, followed by its reinforcements.

Its battles are fierce in every raid,

and its spears and swords are sharpened,

in the hands of ranks of its troops that charged

against me; its ranks marched through my heart.

And love remains—may its bounty dry up!—

the companion of one whose companion has departed.

A companion who loyally honors his companion's due:

once it befriends a person, it is his ally.

Ah, may God protect a heart assailed

by love in its strength, and even in its weakness.

So now, whenever the air stirs, he takes it

for love, so the gardens' gentle breezes frighten him.

He speaks to ruins, cherishing their echo,

and listens to a bān tree rustling on and on.

The breeze passing over the ghaḍā stirs him,

as though its sound and whispering were a lament.

So do not reproach him, you two, if he weeps every hour:

for he is lovesick and sorrowful at heart.

For he bears that passion you two have heard

of: Qays is its slave and serving boy.

Far from it! Qays suffered no more than this man suffered

from love, when its reversals wronged him.

It is torment enough for him that, in his heart,

    love's light burden becomes heavy,

and that in every limb he has sensations of

love, so he is wasted and afflicted in every limb.

He mourns as doves mourn; if only he

were a dove, to flutter toward his beloved.

And he weeps as clouds weep; if only he

were a cloud come to rest above the dwellings.

    كأَنَّ سهاماً نافذاتٍ حروفهُ

    Ah, to love belongs all the love within the heart;

as though its letters were piercing arrows.

    فَلَيسَ بِباقٍ منهُ الّا خَريفهُ

    Because of it, the springtime of my life has passed;

so nothing remains of it but its autumn.
