هَوىًlove بينbetween التحرُّكmotion والسكونِand stillness
يَهيجُflares up بِهِthrough it لَظىblaze القَلبthe heart الحَزينِsorrowful
Love between motion and stillness,
My longing sways between movement and stillness
Through it, the sorrowful heart's blaze flares.
Stirring the sorrow in my grieving heart
وَماand not بَرحceased الهوىlove المقصورُthe short-ended form فيناwithin us
كممدودِlike the long-ended form الهواair فيat كلevery حينِmoment
And love—the 'shortened' word—within us has ever been
And endless longing remains confined in me
Like air—the 'extended' word—at every moment.
Like breath endlessly extended in every moment
وَصدرٌand a breast ضمَّheld قَلباًa heart ضمَّheld وجداًardent love
فَكانَso there were بِهِwithin it شجونٌsorrows فيwithin شجونِsorrows
And a breast held a heart that held ardent love,
My chest embraces a heart that embraces passion
So within it were sorrows within sorrows.
Filling it with sorrow upon sorrow
وَياand O لِلَّهِGod! (an appeal) شَوقٌa yearning فيwithin ضُلوعٍribs
اقامdwelt بهنَّwithin them كالداءِlike a malady الدَفينِburied; deep-seated
And, O God, a yearning within the ribs
Oh how longing dwells within my ribs
Has dwelt within them like a deep-seated malady.
Established there like an enduring illness
أَشوقI yearn الىfor الَّذيthe one who مثّلتI fashioned مِنهُfrom him
مثالاًan image لَيسَis not منof ماءِwater وطينِand clay
I yearn for the one from whom I fashioned
I yearn for the one who was for me
An image not of water and clay.
An image not of water or of clay
وَماand not حبُّlove of العيونِthe eyes يعدُّis counted حباlove
فحبُّfor love of العينthe eye منfrom حبِّlove of العيونِthe eyes
And love of eyes is not counted as love,
For the love of eyes is not love
For the eye's love comes from love of eyes.
The love of an eye comes from loving eyes
وَلاnor كُلُّall المحبةlove عنfrom ودادٍaffection
يُنَزَّهُis kept free عنfrom اراجيفfalse rumors الظنونِsuspicions
Nor does all love spring from affection
Nor is all love free from the gossip of suspicions
Kept free of suspicion's false rumors.
Oh you, to whom my heart is pledged
أَلاah! ياO مَنone who لَهُfor him فيin القَلبthe heart عَهدٌa pledge
كَنَقشٍlike an engraving خُطَّwas inscribed فيin الصخرthe rock المَتينِsolid
Ah, you who hold a pledge within the heart,
Like an inscription carved in solid rock
Like an engraving inscribed in solid rock.
If you turn your affection to my heart
لَئنif indeed عطفتbent محبتكمlove for you (plural) فؤاديmy heart
فَكَمfor how often يَلويtwists الهواthe wind رطبَtender الغصونِthe branches
If indeed love for you has bent my heart,
How it would bend tender branches in longing
For how often the wind twists tender branches!
I sent you a greeting with the breeze
بعثتُI sent مَعwith النَسيمthe breeze لكمto you (plural) سَلاماًa greeting
حكىechoed بالطببprobably 'in fragrance' (text unclear) عَرفَscent الياسَمينِjasmine
With the breeze I sent you a greeting
That told of aroma and jasmine
That echoed jasmine's scent in fragrance.
I sent it to a faithful soul
بعثتُI sent بِهِwith it الىto روحٍa spirit أَمينٍtrustworthy
عساهُmay it يَكونbe مَعwith ريحٍa wind أَمينِtrustworthy
I sent it to a trustworthy spirit,
Hopefully borne on a faithful wind
May it be with a trustworthy wind.
I saw you had willingly embraced asceticism
رأَيتكَI saw you قدalready أَلِفتyou grew accustomed to الزهدَasceticism طوعاًwillingly
بحيثin that رغبتَyou desired فيfor الحقthe truth المُبينِmanifest
I saw that you had willingly embraced asceticism,
To the point you preferred the clear truth
As you desired the manifest truth.
So you sell not religion for worldliness
فَلَستَso you are not بِبائِعٍone who sells ديناًfaith بدنياfor worldly life
وَلَستَand you are not بمشترٍone who buys دنياworldly life بِدينِwith faith
So you do not sell faith for worldly life,
And buy not worldliness with religion
Nor buy worldly life with faith.
