بينَ القلوب وبين الحسن بالنظرِ

Like an electrical conductor, the eye is a conduit

Like an electric wire the eye conveys

between hearts and beauty, through its gaze.

Between hearts and beauty through sight

بالعينِ لذَّة دنيانا وَبهجتُها

بالعينِ لذَّة دنيانا وَبهجتُها

وَالعين مُستوطنُ الإِيذاءِ والضررِ

وَالعين مُستوطنُ الإِيذاءِ والضررِ

Through the eye come our world's pleasure and delight,

With the eye is worldly pleasure and its joy

and the eye is the dwelling place of hurt and harm.

And the eye settles harm and damage

قد اذنبت مقلتي ذنباً بنظرتها

فعُوقبَت بقروح الدمعِ والسهرِ

My eye has indeed committed a sin through its glance,

My eyelashes have sinned a sin with their glance

so it was punished with the sores of tears and sleeplessness.

وعُوقب القلب مني حين هام فقد
