الم ترَ كَم اذنٍ لَهُ للتَسمُّعِ
I saw the oud, drunken, swaying, and was told:
I see the lute swaying, intoxicated; then I was told:
“Have you not seen how many ears it has for listening?
Have you not seen how many ears it has for listening?
وَقَدand indeed وُصلتwere linked آذانهُits ears بلحونهِto its melodies
وَقَد وُصلت آذانهُ بلحونهِ
فَباتso it spent the night نَزيفاًdrunk لاnot يَفيقit sobers up ولاand not يَعيit comprehends
فَبات نَزيفاً لا يَفيق ولا يَعي
Its ears are joined to its own melodies,
And its ears have been linked to its melodies,
so it spent the night drunk senseless—neither sobering nor aware.”
So it spent the night drunk, neither sobering up nor comprehending.
