By God, how firmly passion clings to me

in the realm of play and youthful dalliance!

And how intense is my ardor

    for every swaying, full-breasted maiden!

Her lush flank has drunk its fill,

like a bough, from the spring of sweet saliva.

When she sways, she bends hearts

too deeply in love to turn away.

And when she reveals herself, she brightens eyes

with the radiance of an unveiled face.

And when she speaks, she delights the ear

with the beauty of her sweet words.

    صبٌّ غدا منهُ في عَذابِ

    So no coquetry there humiliates

    a lovesick lover whom it has left in torment;

nor does her gazelle-like shying arise

    from boredom or from disquiet.

    محبُّهُ لَيسَ بالمُحابي

    There, love is desirable;

    its lover is not biased.

It goes no further than a glance until

it is freed from the suspicion of doubt.

And love, like speech from one

    who loves, requires a reply.

So if I speak and am not answered

by the one I address, I repent of my speech.

This is my law, and this

is my book in the faith of lovers.

So leave the devotees of passion in strife,

and in quarrels, and in reproach.

They find the torment in it sweet,

    from enemies, not from friends.

And they seek approval for themselves

from folk who are angry in love.

Humiliation, by God, is nothing but this.

Where, one wonders, is youth's dignity?

I ask God's forgiveness; I am not content

with this, nor is that what I seek.

And praise be to God: indeed, my soul

    is safe from approaching humiliation.

And indeed, I love the inner qualities,

like a lover of the sword, not the scabbard.
