جِسمٌa body أَخفُّlighter منthan المياهِwater وعكسُهُand its opposite
وُزِناwere both weighed بهاin it فالكلُّso the whole يَنقُصdecreases ثقلهُits weight
A body lighter than water, and its opposite,
A body lighter than water, yet
were weighed in it; the whole's weight decreases.
Weighed against it, all loses weight
وَالنقصُand the loss قدhas عدَلequaled الخَفيفَthe light body وفوقهُand beyond it
جزءٌa portion منof الثانيthe second فَيَبقىso remains فضلهُits surplus
The loss has equaled the light body and, beyond it,
The loss balances the light and tops it
a portion of the second, so its surplus remains.
A part of the second remains in excess
فَكلاهماso both of them فيin المآءِwater اثقلُheavier منهماthan both of them
وزنُthe weight الثَقيلof the heavy body اذwhen الهوآءُair محلهُits medium
Thus, heavier than the two together in water
So both in water are heavier than both
is the heavy body's weight when air is its medium.
The weight of the heavy, when air is its place
وَكلاهماand both of them كلٌّa whole وذلكand that جزؤُهُits part
فالجزءُso the part باتhas become يقلُّis less عنهُthan it كلهُits whole
And the two together are a whole, and that is its part;
And both are wholes, that being their part
so the part now outweighs its whole.
So the part comes to be less than its whole
ومنand from الضرورةnecessity انthat يزيدbe greater الجزءُthe part عنthan
كلٍّa whole بقلبهماby reversing both of them فذلكso that مثلهُis like it
And necessarily the part must exceed
And of necessity the part exceeds
a whole when the two are reversed; that case is similar.
Any whole by inverting them, that being its likeness
واذاand if اِعتبرتَyou considered الامرَthe matter هانbecame easy عليكfor you انto

And if you consider the matter, you will find it easy to
And if you consider the matter, it is easy for you to
leave them weightless—so put it to the test.
Keep them without weight, so inform him

Thus you see the whole nonexistent, although
Thus you see the whole as nonexistent, though
its lesser part had attained existence.
Existence through it gains the least
