My tears flowed over my eye sockets and streamed down.

And the heat of ghada wood grew within my heart and blazed.

And my heart was shattered the day I was told of his death.

And the world closed in on me, and my tears poured down.

And sorrows grew within me, and anguish tormented me.

And, by God, do not ask about my grieving heart.

I shall weep for him whenever night grows dark,

And whenever radiant morning smiles, and whenever it dawns.

He was indeed a rising full moon of surpassing beauty,

And now, after radiance and splendor, he has set.

And he was a chief, with noble paternal and maternal uncles.

When war's market was in full swing, he knew no fear.

The vile men's cavalry surrounded him, all of them,

And they had given the Indian blade and spears mastery over him.

Ah, what sorrow! If only I had been there,

With a gleaming sword, keen on both edges and unsheathed,

I would have left them carrion amid the raging battles,

To which birds would be drawn, on plain and mountain.

And by the sanctity of Him to whose House Quraysh made pilgrimage,

And who sent Taha, the Chosen One, the ultimate hope,

I shall surely slay a thousand of their chiefs in battle,

If the All-Merciful keeps me safe and my allotted life is long enough.
