1. عز القصيد وزاعلتنى حروفه

    من يوم غاب اللي قصيدي ... مهاويه

    Poetry has grown elusive, and its letters have quarreled with me.

    Since the day the one my verse adores went away.

  2. غابت به الدنيا وخلت طيوفه

    عزي ... لمن مثلى زمانه يعاديه

    The world vanished with him, leaving his phantoms behind.

    Alas for one like me, whose time turns against him.

  3. عقب الملاقي بس بالقلب اشوفه

    وعقب المناجي ... بس بالفكر اناجيه

    After our meetings, I see him only in my heart.

    And after our intimate talks, I confide in him only in thought.

  4. كلامي وشوفي لغيره ... حسوفه

    من غيره يخاوي غريبي واخاويه

    My words and my gaze are wasted on anyone but him.

    Who else befriends my lonely self, as I befriend him?

  5. يالوعه المشتاق تصفق كفوفه

    لين التفت ماشاف بالدار غاليه

    Oh, the yearning one's anguish—his palms strike together,

    When he turned, he did not see his beloved at home.

  6. كن العيون بكل شين محذوفه

    والقلب كن جموع ... الأيام ترميه

    As though the eyes were pelted with every ugly thing,

    And the heart as though the hosts of days were pelting it.

  7. تسابقني من زماني سيوفه

    تجرح مرادي .. في حياتي وترميه

    The swords of my time race against me.

    They wound my hope in life and cast it aside.

  8. ياعونه الرحمن ... وين النكوفه

    لين انتحي ... الخفاق وش عاد يثنيه

    Help, O Most Merciful—where can I turn back?

    Once the beating heart sets its course, what can turn it back now?

  9. مارحت ادور عند خلى مروفه

    مايرحم ... الا الله فلا شك مغليه

    I did not go seeking compassion from my beloved.

    None but God shows mercy; without doubt, I hold him dear.
