O falcon, how fortunate you are—you have a wing to fly with.

Whenever the urge comes to you, you take off and fly toward the open air.

Between my heart and you, by God, the difference is vast.

When you beat your wings, you take flight; when I do, my heart writhes.

You circle aloft, while I can barely walk on the ground.

In the deserts of my days, the wolf of my night has howled.

Above, your sky holds clouds; below, mine holds scorching noon heat.

My foot is on burning sand, and my heart writhes.

Beware, O falcon, lest they net you and hold you captive.

Woe to a falcon whose tether jerks it back when it means to fly.

The nights have hooded it on a low perch,

after it had flapped its wing in the air whenever it pleased.

    حومته بالسما ساعة لقلبه دوا

    Every free falcon, when distressed, rises to take flight;

an hour of circling in the sky is balm for its heart.

Oh, the agony of the wing a crippled falcon drags!

Whenever it springs up with broken flight feathers, it falls.
