Awake, O instrument of oppression, evil, and blindness!

For your evil burns ever fiercer in my depths.

Leave me, O world; you hold nothing I desire

that could ease my grief, nor any gain.

I am the one who resents and scorns you; and though I may

live, I shall meet you against my will.

Your misery, O world—show me its cup,

so I may drink it to the dregs, enamored.

For the worst misery is not being given it all in one draught,

in that way, though you reveal it to me in portions.

And what have I to do with hopes in you, when they are

the deceit of a mirage that does not quench thirst?

I was long beguiled by them and tried to attain them,

but I reaped only disappointment and remorse.

A time gone by—how bitter it was to live through,

and its nights—how wretched, how ruinous, how dark!

When memory brings its image back to me,

I see it before me, baring its teeth and scowling.

    تجرعَّها قلبي أسى وتألما

    The truth of this universe is always bitter;

my heart has drunk it down in sorrow and anguish.

Indeed, my soul has grown weary of a life grown dense

with darkness, so neither earth nor sky is lit.

I endured evil in it until I knew it,

and good and evil became twins to me.

And I am no feeble coward, nor one

who complains fretfully of harm and pain.

But the excess has grown greater still, and on the verge

of breaking are patience's bonds, after holding firm.
