بذلتَyou surrendered الكئيبَthe sorrowful one لأحزانهِto his sorrows
بذلتَ الكئيبَ لأحزانهِ

لأوصابهِ وبهجرانهِ
You surrendered the sorrowful one to his sorrows,
You gave your sad one to his sorrows,
to his afflictions, and by abandoning him.
To his misfortunes and his estrangement,
وجُرتَand you were cruel علىto طرفِan eye باكيweeping الجفوthe eyelids (word continues)
وجُرتَ على طرفِ باكي الجفو

نِ مُنحدرِ الدمعِ هَتَّانهِ
And you were cruel to an eye with weeping eye-
And you let flow down the cheek of the weeping willow
lids, streaming with tears and shedding them in torrents.
The cascade of his falling tears.
فوكلتَهُso you consigned it بالذيto that which إنif يَدُمit lasts
فوكلتَهُ بالذي إن يَدُم

سيأتي على نفسِ إنسانهِ
So you consigned it to what, if it lasts,
You left him to the One who, if He wills,
will destroy the very life of its pupil.
Will destroy the very soul of man.

فليسَ سُهادُكَ من شأنهِ
So sleep—may you know no joy! And if you do not sleep,
So sleep! Do not delight, and if you cannot sleep,
then your sleeplessness has nothing to do with him.
It is no fault of His.
