    كأنكَ بعد الضرِّ خالٍ من النفعِ

    You feigned forgetting what you lodged in your hearing, O my hearing;

    As though, after harm, you were devoid of benefit.

    Is there not, in your two eyes—which are what they are—

    Something other than refusal for a dejected man who hopes in you?

    If indeed you are made for estrangement, well versed in it,

    Then patience is neither in my heart's makeup nor in my nature.

    And if a garden has brought laughter upon your cheek,

    Then upon my cheek is a downpour of tears.

    Ask this year's rain, which covered your land:

    Did it come in the same measure as my overflowing tears?
