ماwhat harm علىto الغضبانِthe angry one لوif كانَhe had been رَضيpleased
وَرثَىand pitied ليfor me منbecause of تمادِيthe persistence of مَرضِيmy illness
What would it cost the angry one to relent
The angry one should not blame me if I was pleased
And pity me for my lingering illness?
And grieved for me from the progression of my illness
قالَhe said ليto me لمَّاwhen تَشكَّيتُI complained of الهَوىlove

He said to me, when I complained of love:
He said to me when I complained of love
"Praise God; thus it was decreed."
Thank God, that was his decree
قلتI said حاشاfar be it from اللَهGod أنthat يقضيHe should decree بذاin this way
بلrather قضاهُdecreed it صاحبُthe one with الوجهِthe face الوَضِيradiant
I said: "God forbid that He should decree this!
I said, God forbid that He would decree this
Rather, the one with the radiant face decreed it.
Rather, it was decreed by the owner of the radiant face
أنتَyou شرَّدتَyou drove away رُقاديmy sleep ظالماًunjustly
فاجعلِso make الإنصافَfair treatment منهُin exchange for it عِوَضِيmy recompense
You unjustly drove away my sleep,
You dispersed my tranquility unjustly
So make fair treatment my recompense for it."
So make fairness my compensation
