    They haltered the mounts on the morning of parting and departed.

    And left me behind at the ruins, weeping over them.

    Do you forsake, out of pride, a youth enamored of you?

    It is only right that you answer a lovesick man's plea.

    حيُّوا بأحسنَ منها أو فردُّوها

    He sent you his greeting despite the distance;

    Greet him with a better one, or return it in kind.

    I saw them off; they grew suspicious of me, so I told them:

    "I was sent with the camels to urge them on with song."

    They said, "What is this breath rising from you, full of sighs,

    And why do the corners of your eye not stop weeping?"

    I said, "The panting comes from your relentless pace,

    And my eye sheds tears from a speck of grit within it."

    At last, when they departed and the night was thick with darkness,

    I lowered my voice beneath its wing, calling to her:

    "O you for whom I am distraught with love and crazed,

    Is there any prospect of reunion for me to hope for?

    فإن عزَمتم على قتلي فسوقُوها

    My soul is driven on whenever your riding camels are driven on;

    So if you resolve to kill me, drive them on."
