The carefree one has fallen asleep, while my eye’s night keeps vigil.

O my eye, is there no end to my night?

O you who departed, at whose loss solace too departed,

If you are absent from my sight, the memory of you is present.

Where can I find a sun by whose light I may live,

Among people, or a luminous, radiant moon?

Where on the spacious earth is there a garden,

If he is not there—or a flourishing branch of the bān tree?
