اغتربَgrew estranged النومُsleep عنfrom غريبِa stranger
اغتربَ النومُ عن غريبِ
غداةَon the morning ماwhat بيails me عنaway from الحبيبِthe beloved
غداةَ ما بي عن الحبيبِ
Sleep grew estranged from a stranger,
Sleep deserted a lonely one
That morning, in my suffering apart from the beloved.
The morning I was parted from my beloved
وأسرعَand hastened الشوقُlonging فيهwithin him حتىuntil
وأسرعَ الشوقُ فيه حتى
تناولَtook hold of الدمعtears منfrom قريبِnearby
تناولَ الدمع من قريبِ
And longing raced within him until
And yearning rushed upon him until
It took hold of tears close at hand.
His tears drew near
للهِfor God (in wonder) ماذاwhat بوجنتيهِupon his two cheeks
للهِ ماذا بوجنتيهِ
منof عبراتٍtears ومنand of نحيبِsobbing
من عبراتٍ ومن نحيبِ
God! What lies upon his cheeks
By Allah, what did my cheeks show
Of tears and of sobbing!
Of tears and lamentations
بثَتthey scattered دماءًblood علىupon دموعٍtears
بثَت دماءً على دموعٍ
فوقَabove نُدوبٍscars علىupon ندوبِscars
فوقَ نُدوبٍ على ندوبِ
They scattered blood upon tears,
They shed blood over tears
