ياO نائمَsleeping الطرفِthe eye هناكَmay it gladden you الكَرىslumber
لمdid not يَرثِpity ليfor me طرفُكَyour eye ممَّاat what يَرىit sees
O sleepy-eyed one, may slumber be sweet to you.
O you who sleeps with eyelids closed over there
Your eye has shown me no pity at what it sees.
Your eyes have not inherited any tears from what they see
لمdid not تدرِknow عَينيmy eye ماwhat جَنىwrought لحظُهاits glance
حتىuntil جَرىflowed مِنfrom دَمعهاits tears ماwhat جَرىflowed
My eye did not know what its glance had wrought,
My eyes did not know what they had attained
until its tears flowed as they did.
Until tears flowed from them as they flowed
ماwhat ضَرَّharm منthe one whose أنحلنيmade me waste away هَجرُهُhis desertion
لوif رَدَّrestored منيof me وصلُهُreunion with him ياoh تُرَىI wonder
What harm would it do the one whose desertion wasted me,
It would not have harmed me if his estrangement had undone me
if reunion with him restored me, I wonder?
If only his union would return to me, I wonder

Among all who saw me submissive,
Everyone who saw me humbled
he grew haughty at the reverence shown him, and doubted.
Wandered, awed by reverence for him, and hesitated
