ياO نومَsleep of عينيmy eye منwho استباحَكdespoiled you
وَعنand from محلِّthe abode of الكرىslumber أزاحَكdisplaced you
O sleep of my eye, who has despoiled you
O sleep of my eyes, who made you halal
and driven you from the abode of slumber?
And took you away from the abode of grief
قدindeed كنتَyou were فيماin the time that خلاpassed مقيماًdwelling
لوif رَدَّهُbrought him back شوقُهُhis longing أراحَكgave you rest
You once dwelt there in days gone by.
You used to stay, if it weren't for longing
Had his longing brought him back, he would have given you rest.
That would have granted you rest if it could
كأنماas though كنتَyou were حلفَan ally of قلبٍa heart
آمنmade secure منfrom مقلتيmy eye نزاحكyour departure
As though you were the ally of a heart
As if you were the oath of a heart
that made your departure from my eye secure.
That felt safe from the departure of my eyelids
فعجلَso may He hasten اللهُGod ياO رقاديmy slumber
منfrom أسرِthe captivity of طولِthe duration of الهوىlove سراحَكyour release
So may God hasten, O my slumber,
So may God hasten, O my slumber
your release from the captivity of prolonged love.
To free you from the captivity of prolonged passion
