يا فُؤادِي لقد صبَر

تُ علَى لَومِ لائِمي

O my heart, I have indeed endured

the reproach of my reproacher;

Borne blame from those who blame me

وتجرَّعتَ غصَّةً

وتجرَّعتَ غصَّةً

من حبيبٍ مُصارِمِ

من حبيبٍ مُصارِمِ

and you have swallowed a choking pang

And swallowed bitterness

from a beloved who severs ties,

From a beloved who fights me

من هو الشمسُ فوقَ غص

من هو الشمسُ فوقَ غص

نٍ من البانِ ناعمِ

نٍ من البانِ ناعمِ

one who is the sun above a bough

Who is the sun above branches

of the bān tree, supple.

Of soft fingered banana trees

بأَبي ذاكَ ظالِماً

بأَبي ذاكَ ظالِماً

كانَ أو غيرَ ظالمِ

كانَ أو غيرَ ظالمِ

May my father be that one's ransom, whether unjust

By my father whether he was unjust

he be or not unjust.

Or other than unjust
