O eyelids of the eye, where is slumber?

Rarely does a body survive this.

Ask my two eyes what ails them:

Is it love that made them weep, or sorrow?

    And a love-stricken, ailing heart,

Which something beautiful has driven toward beauty.

The excuse is clear to whoever reproaches me:

    Only allurements beckon hearts.

I wept; indeed, weeping becomes me.

He was lost to sight, so solace and slumber vanished.

Alas, my body—how it melted from my anguish!

A heart falls ill, and so does the body.

No—how often the tears have already run dry!

My Lord, the time has not come for sorrow to end.

Oh, may my father be ransom for him whose love has wasted me,

And for him whose whole being brings sorrow to all of me.
