If you had mercy on the one you have come to possess,

You would have turned back death, which nearly overtook him.

O you who are beauty itself, except that you are human,

Nothing shares with him the essence of light.

Ask one crazed with love, bound to prolonged illness,

Enslaved by love—you wear him down and make him laugh.

Repeated mention of you enriches him, yet would surrender him

To death, but for a hope from you that holds him back.
