فارقته فعلى من الجزعُ

If I do not die of anguish for a beloved

If I do not die of grief for a love

from whom I have parted, then for whom should I grieve?

I left behind, then for whom is grief?

فيضُ الدموعِ عليهِ متصِلٌ

فيضُ الدموعِ عليهِ متصِلٌ

من حسرتي والصبرُ منقطعُ

من حسرتي والصبرُ منقطعُ

The flood of tears over him is unceasing

My tears flow incessantly for him,

from my sorrow, while patience is exhausted.

Out of sorrow, while patience is cut off.

وزفيرها بين يصعدها

وزفيرها بين يصعدها

نفسٌ تفرقُ ثم تجتمعُ

نفسٌ تفرقُ ثم تجتمعُ

And its sighing is plain; it is lifted by

My sighs ascend bearing her image,

a soul that scatters, then comes together.

A soul scattered, then brought together.

لم أدرِ يا قلبي ويا بصري

لم أدرِ يا قلبي ويا بصري

وهواهُ أن فِراقَهُ يقَعُ

وهواهُ أن فِراقَهُ يقَعُ

I did not know, O my heart and O my sight—

I did not know, O my heart and sight,

by my love for him—that parting from him would come.

That parting from his love would happen.
